kerley
Right I have a long while before i actually start attending university, over 2 years infact, however, my school is starting the ucas forms and personal statements now as most people who arent taking a gap year will be going in just over a year. Anyway, basically for me any university is an option as the few subjects i would like to take are available at most uni's, so where have people been, going to or attending and what makes it good for you? Also what courses other than maths include mathmatical asspects? (sorry bout the massive amount of blabber im so confused bout uni's)
Tomm
I'm not gonna say that Manchester is better than any other uni in the country, because it probably isn't. Wherever you go, you'll have fun I'm sure. So perhaps don't worry about where to go so much. And Physics, Engineering, Economics? They're the obvious maths-related ones. matthewholdsworth
anything economics will include a hell of a lot of maths especailly if you do a BSc in it, dont go to the LSE (london school of economics) it sucks and has no social life, thats why i left, although london is awesome to ride. i do economics and geography at sheffield uni (not hallam) and its brill place to be, but the econ dept is in a shocking state and i would not apply to do econ here had i know this. geog dept is fine though! psychology has a maths paper in most places as does geog (these are stats modules). maths gets tagged onto everything because no one in their right mind would do it on its own (only my opinion). all maths in degrees is doable if you work at it i got 89% in my exam this time which amazed me. what makes uni good? you do! sounds sad but its true the more you get ivolved with things the more fun you will have, work at your subject, do extra reading it helps a lot (takes up riding time though). go to all the open days, i turned durham down because there were some arrogant toffs on the open day who thought i was below them because i come from yorkshire. also, durham has far too many oxbridge rejects (my girlfriend is the only person i know who is there who didnt apply to oxbridge) who still, even in their final year moan and feel hard done by because they didnt get into oxford/cambridge - GET OVER IT. sorry but those people wind me up, open days are a good skive from 6th form and THE best way to get an idea of the potential peers u will meet. best way to get an idea of the subject is to get to someone u know's lectures. open days are rubbish for finding out about your subject B at gcse maths to do economics is NOT enough hope this helps
Dai the Socket
My sister goes to York and she's really enjoying it! She's studying something starting with "P", Philosophy maybe?, and Chinese as a secondary subject thing. Not 100% sure 'cos I don't really get that interested in it, but hey! I'm definatly going to Uni. I'm picking somewhere close-ish to home, but far enough to be able to live there and have my own space. I'm really thinking about Leeds, because it's only an hour Bus (which goes past my house) from Halifax. And half an hour train! It's awesome to ride and loads of my mates go there really regularly. Carl, one of my mates from Guiseley is thinking about going there, which will be cool. I'm one of those people who's scared about making friends etc so i'm fairly scared when I do go, but life at my school at the moment is very 'average'. Sorry this isn't a very helpful post, but it got me thinking :) Hope you find deciding ok, Nick :)

Seeing as you live in Dorset you will probably want to study somewhere in the south... I think I was in the same sort of boat as you. For my A-levels I was doing Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics. I had no idea what or where I wanted to study at this point in the lower sixth. I enjoyed maths and was naturally good at it, but I couldn't possibly condone studying just maths for 3/4 years straight. I've ended up studying Chemistry at Bristol, starting in October as I am currently on a gap year. I can't wait. These days, an awful lot rests on your AS-level results. Make sure you work hard, getting good grades is such a helping hand for university places. If it wasn't for AS-levels I don't think I would have even been interviewed at some of my Unis! Erm, yeah. kerley
im doin pretty much the same as you im taking maths, further maths, physics and accounting. I really dont enjoy accounting and physics i can do but i still find reasonably hard and maths i just seem to be able to get on with, which is the main reason for me wanting to do maths. I have been looking at southampton and thats bout all. Loughborough is also an option but it all depends on my subject choice.
