Tom Booth
are you using a proper gear cog(such as a king kog?) or a freewheel? if its a freewheel its normal as freewheels are not toally perfect when made, there a little offset so the chain tension get tighter sometimes when pedaling backwards. this could also apply to cogs aswell i suppose? ian
right im using a cog out of a cassete on a hope bulb hub. the crankset was brand new from tartybikes. the only thing i can see that is wrong is that the chainrings are too small etc.
Tartridge
How old are the chain and rear sprocket? You say the mech moves downwards when you backpedal... do you mean upwards? Is the chain catching on it at all? Adam
rhythm_101
if your using a mech for a tensioner, make sure that its adjusted correctly, by this i mean so that it's in line with the cog, the mech could also be slightly bent, not allowing the chain to run smoothly backwards, so check that the mech's not bent, and is adjusted correctly so that the top jockey wheel is in-line with the cog :) :) EDIT: also check that your mech hanger is straight :) EDIT: also check that your chain isn't twisted ans everything is correctly fitted, i.e the chains split pin is fitted right, and there are no stiff links etc... ian
hi i just took my hub apart to check if it was that and it turns out that my hub needs sending back to hope etc. and im going to replace my chain and mech because they are fairly old. thanks for all your help ian
Rossi
I did the same gear ratio change, and my gear skipped when I pedalled hard. At first, I thought it was my rear mech not giving enough tension. But it wasn't, I was using a standard cassette cog on the back (14t). I bought a 14t DX and it solved all my problems, so maybe consider a rear cog? Ie, King or Shimano/Gusset. Rossi.
