Running Short Cranks On A Stock?

i've got 175mm cranks on my leeson atm running a 22-18 set up. if i stepped down to 160mm cranks and a proportional cog size what difference would i feel? would i need to run a harded/easier gear to compensate for the crank lenght difference?

sorry to clog up the board but couldn't find the info anywhere else

cheers

Well...

I recently went from 158mm cranks on my T-Pro to 175mm cranks.

I retained the 18:12 (or 1.5 rotations of the back wheel per crank revolution) gear ratio, but because I made the crank arm longer, I can get the power more easily, as it were. This is just 'cos of the whole leverage principles and all that jazz - similar to how pushing a door from the outer edge is easier than by the hinges.

It's made riding a lot nicer now; it's really easy to do powermoves, backwheeling's a bit nicer because I take off later due to the fact it feels spinnier, which makes it easier to tap.

Your situation is going to be the other way round though, where if you keep 22:18 but reduce your crank length it'll feel harder to pedal. You'll either need to get some roadie-style legs to keep it feeling the same, or you'll just have to pedal harder/start your take-off sooner. If you change the ratio though, it'll basically be the same, but you'll need to use a smaller set o' rings, which should suit your "My Leeson will look nicer" needs, if the Middleburn thread was your's?

:"> yes that was mine, i was determined not to fall into the pimping my bike craze that is sweeping the country but i think ym bike looks so ugly with the big 22t bash on it so wanted to make it all a bit smaller...

hey pete

i'm either going to get a super pro trials 16t ti ring and bash on some burns or a set of echo cranks with a specially made bash and a little cog. not sure which yet though, i guess i'll have to wait until the pay cheque comes in, if its fat it'll be the burns, if its not so fat it'll be the echo's...

I would wait for the burns dude, the echos will no doubt die at some point whereas the burns will keep on going. Oh and will and i will be along tomorrow night (Y)

Tom you may need to run a 19 or even a 20 tooth cog on the bck to get it nearer. it is amazing how much crank length makes a difference when riding trials. it did me when i was using 175 middleburns then swopped em for a pair of 170!i had to sell em straight away cos i cudnt get used to the pedalling circle being smaller and the gear being that little bit harder.

its amazing what the little differences make.
