Ck + Fatty's = :(

for a while now ive been having problems with my CK headset's crown race not fitting on my steerer tube properly (the gap in the pic) and ive noticed that my headset is always very slightly loose.

however i cannot get it tight as if I tighten my star nut any more it pulls out of the steerer. (btw it went in easy so i was wondering if fattys have a slightly larger inside tube diameter so redering the nut ineffective? if so what is the solution?)

The solutions i have tried are getting a new star nut. and checking the steerer tube has enough spacers on it. So the only reason I can think of for this to be happening is the gap. so i was wondering if I took my bike into my LBS would they be able to use a crown race setting tool to put it on further. Rather then my attempts with a hammer :ermm: ? or is there a known incompatibility(SP) with fattys and CK headsets?

the pic (soz bout blurrrrrreynessss :( )

Er, with a CK Headset I think I'd pretty much demand that the only thing that touched it was a headset tool :ermm: Take it into them and they can see if it's seated flat.

Is that well blurry, hard to see gap in that pic uniform height all the way around, or is it slightly higher in some places rather than others?

Is your star-nut in vertically? If it's at a slight angle, it'll stop you being able to tighten it fully.

With regards the star-nut being pulled out, I'm currently running two; a thread-less top one (somehow managed to rip out the little internal threaded part :() and then another directly below it that the bolt goes into, meaning it's got three layers of the cuppy bit holding it in, which does the job nicely.

Perhaps your headset needs to be reamed? And the headtube faced too, wouldn't hurt...

Humm my gap is't that big but that could mean one of many things :ermm:

Do you have forwad and backward movement in the headset (hold the steam and forks and try and flex them in oposite directions)

Are you sure the race is seated properly

Are you sure the steerer slightly bent :(

these are some things that could be causing the movement

I had a similar problem when trying to fit a hope headset to my fattys. Basically the bottom of the the steerer was too wide for the bearings to fit, so in the end i gave up and got new forks. See what your LBS can do, but mine couldn't do anything.

Good luck anyway and keep us informed if you come up with a solution.
