X-Lite_Rider
I have been looking around and was thinking about buying the new hope trials disc brake for £130 at the moment i am running a front avid which over the last few weeks has started to slowly keep decresing in power. I was wondering is it worth the £130 for the new hope i have had a hope before and i wasnt really that impressed, i was wondering how the power performs over the avid mech also what its like in relation to modulation etc to other hope brakes which i wasnt too keen on. Michael Hardman
Im running a m4 with 205 disc just becasue I had it spare from my dh bike as I sold it all. It seems to perform just aswellas my brothers mono trial but then it weighs alot more and uses a smaller rotor so maybe that proves it works very well. Im happy with mym4 i have no money to buy a new brake and it was free (technically) Only proboem with he mono trials is I find when it locks it has too mcu power and it feels unsafe and un nerving the m4 has so much modulation and it locks up fine but not as sharply and suddenly as the mono trials. Wayne-king
I reccomend the Hayes HFX-9 Mk dh ;) loads of power as well as modulation, not too heavy for a dh brake, nice big rotor and it looks rather nice ;)" plus the Hayes is £30 cheaper than the mono trial (from crc) Edited April 6, 2005 by Wayne-king
bluecatracingcat
If you want a front disc in a budget, get a /shimano M525 off CRC for £49.99 and get some EBC red pads fro £14.25 from cyclestore.co.uk And drill the holes bigger on the rotor with a drill press to make the brake more on/off. It hasn't bedded in, and you were saying that so far it isn't that great, but think it will get better when it beds in. P.s, I run a V so i'm sorry but i can't help :P
trialsking 55
check some of the magura range. alsom try cleaning your pads+rotor. this could make a vast improvement

that NBR dude
Ok, Ive just switched disks this week. Went from a 160 Marta, to a 205 " Avid Juicy 7 and its one of the best disks ive used. I wouldnt reccomend going for the 205, as, quite frankly its overkill (a 160-180 is fine), but, it is an extremely good brake. Its a tad more expensive than some disks out there, but you have the added feature of a TPA, which does allow you to set the brake up exactly how you want it. The lever feel is solid, and feels very robust, unlike some of the plastic tastic magura disks. There is shed loads of modulation all through the lever, and then all of a sudden, you go over the bars. Its not the lightest in the world, and not the cheapest, but I think it is one of the best all rounder brakes out there at the moment. It has that solid on/off feel, but with modulation all thrown into one. Sorry to add more choices to your list, but as far as Im aware, Im the only person here with a Juicy 7, so just thought I would let you know about them Andy Edited April 7, 2005 by NBRtrials.tk
Hobnobs
Was wondering just yesterday if anyone has tried a juicy 7, seeing as the avid cable discs are so good i thought the hydro ones might be a bit sexy. I couldnt justify spending that much on a hope disc, seeing as i can get my avid to work amazingly, surely you could get new pads/rotor or lever or something to try and bring the life back. Better than spending 130 pounds on something you dont need.... Michael Hardman
Good man with the avid juicy, nice to see someone else with a 205 on a mod, they just about look ok perform very well and will hardly ever overheat
Twilite
Never overheated my disc. Didn't think trials really had the right conditions. Hardly 2km descents dragging the brakes all the way! But maybe that's because my disc doesn't work all the well anyway so I don't notice fade as much :) Liking the Avid. Heard a lot about them before they were available here, but that's the first I've seen on a trials bike. Yummy.
X-Lite_Rider
That avid jucy 7 looks very nice indeed but like you said surley 205 rotor for a mod is abit of overkill, how much did you pay for it btw? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=4792 is that what you have it, it only comes in 203mm which would be fun on my mod. How do you rate it over your marta?? Edited April 8, 2005 by X-Lite_Rider
that NBR dude
I payed £95 for it, from Wades Cycles at the Bikeshow. They were the only shop there, selling them, and 205 was all they had left. I think the standard Juicy 7 is perfectly acceptable for anyone, or for a bit extra, maybe the Downhill 180 version. In comparison to my marta, this wins hands down. The marta was an ace brake, extremely light and powerful, but it lacked that overall hold. Frontwheel/backwheel switches were impossible as the brake would just let go, but with the Juicy, not a problem. As I said, the modulation is excellent with it, so you can get as much power from it as you like, and with the load of different adjusting screws and dials, you can get a Hydro disk to feel exactly how you want, which is the reason I bought it. All the people who have ridden my bike since, have all said how amazed they were with the brake, so I reccomend it to everyone as a new alternative to the popular brakes out there. kerley
whats more ridiculous bout that rotor being 205 is that its probably on the bike with the shortest wheelbase on the forum!! i have just got my mono mini working recently after sending it to hope and they rebled it and gave me some new pads, and it would be great on a mod. The mono trial would be awesome, not that i have used one, but try and get your avid sorted without spending out on it too much.
