Has anyone seen my shoe?
olish-born Karol Wojtyla became Pope in 1978, taking a conservative stand on issues like abortion and contraception. I... know that it would be equally ridiculous to believe that it was the Pope who brought down communism with his own hands Memory and Identity Written by the Pope He was the most widely travelled pontiff and visited more than 120 countries during his 26-year papacy. It nearly ended in 1981 when he was shot and seriously wounded as he toured St Peter's Square in Rome. After a long period of recovery he visited and forgave the would-be assassin. John Paul's reign saw radical changes in the world including the collapse of communism and the spread of Aids. Although plagued by ill health throughout the latter part of his papacy he maintained his international schedule and in 2000 made a poignant pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Think about yor posts before you post them RIP pinky ← He also got ran over (Y) Thanks, Callum
Luke Rainbird
John Paul saw radical changes in the world including the collapse of communism and the spread of Aids. RIP pinky ← Had to re-read that for a second, thought you were accusing him of being a right player! Yeah he's made a big change to many peoples' lives and will no doubt be missed worldwide. Not a religious person myself, but I can see the impact this will/has already had on people
Tomm
Shame it's not the death of the Catholic church, eh? Just me then... ← Not just you. It ain't gonna happen, though (1.1Bn Catholics worldwide), but perhaps the new pope won't be so "conservative" on issues like contraception (Which is the main problem I have with the Catholic church). I think it is quite sad, but then again any old man dying is sad.Yeah, I don't really see it as being much different to any old guy that died. Fair enough he did some good, but I don't think he was amazing. Oh well, RIP. And communism is shit, because people will never work as hard for the state as they will for themselves. It's human nature.

Mark W
Communism is good IN THEORY. The problem is that any communist countries have been led by tyrannic asshole dictators who aren't looking for the best for their people. Share the love! (Y) ← Er, I think you'll find the main problem with communism is that it's based on a flawed premise - that humans are innately good. It will never work, no matter who's in charge, just 'cos of human nature. I wouldn't really say he was anything special. He did barely any of the work because there's a huge, huge team of people who actually do all the real work that helps keep the wheels of the church turning. Seriously, the Vatican has a lot of people who do the work that theoretically is "the Pope's" - he was just the sort of front man, as it were. In fairness, I think him forgiving his would-be assassin was kinda... 'good' in a way, but I think it's more impressive that he forgave his staff who let it happen in the first place (they knew it was going to happen but didn't do anything to stop it, warn him, or let him know in time so he could wear body armour just in case). His complete disregard for the modern world hugely limited the amount of 'good' he could do in the world anyway, so he didn't help himself. To put it another way, I've heard just as much bad about him as I have good. Was quite interesting though reading about him when he was younger; when you see how he'd been for the last years of his life, then see pictures of him when he was younger going skiing and being full of life and vitality, it makes you realise just how bad he'd become, health-wise. Still, it sucks that his life ended in the way that it did. Mark

RicH_87
I heard today, i ain't too religious but i agree that religion aside, he did do a lot of good for a lot of people. The thing that shocked me most was that they showed him dead on the news, i wasn't shocked becasue he was dead, more the fact that he wasn't in a coffin or anything, he was just laid out on a slab looking rather dapper in his massive robe. Yeh, anyway...." RIP

Shaun
So, if we didn't have Religion, Capitalism or Communism what would we be living in? A world of tree huggers and f**king do gooders? At least Religion gives some purpose to some people lives. Just like Trials is giving most of the people on here purpose in their lives. For some of you to slag of Religion of is amazing. "ooh but Religion has caused this that and the other and all these problems blah blah blah" We cause problems to listed walls outside St. Pauls Cathedral, like big chinks in the walls from bashguards. I myself am a Catholic. I am a real educated Catholic. I'm not about to start preaching or forcing you to "convert" or what have you, I'm not a saint either (Lisa in Browns *strip club in City of London* will tell you that..... What a night!) So when people start talking bullshit it gets on my nerves.
Mark W
We cause problems to listed walls outside St. Pauls Cathedral, like big chinks in the walls from bashguards. ← Not really in the same league as causing global persecution, people being murdered in the name of itself, y'know, that sort of thing. MadManMike
Religion annoys me. Why people beleive it I don't know, I don't beleive Willy Wonka really has a chocolate factory as impressive as it is in the film, so why beleive a random long haired guy did miracles??? I can't really see where the existance of Willy Wonka comes into play of the "existance" of religon? Religon doesn't exist or not exist, it's just there. I dont really care what religon people are or whether religon is based on fact or not based on fact, it makes no difference, as long as religon doesn't affect me if I don't want it to affect me.
