Frenchman
Something i thought i should share. Pete Wright's new rear wheel. This is taking wide rims to the next level!! Surly large marge rim drilled by bigman. Profile 6 speed hub (32h) Maxxis 2.7" highroller. He brought it round mine earlier and it isnt offensively heavy. Good job he is building a custom frame as there isnt much chance in fitting one of these in a conventional trials frame withoug running disk. cheers frenchman
JonMack
What's the advantage/point?
Mark W
It does seem a bit pointless :- And has he actually got grey rim tape there or has he just not bothered with it?
CH!P
Not really seeing the point, Koxx rims are wide enough (though poo). Should look nice on the back of a bike though. I like wide rims.
Mark W
If he's running Maguras, isn't it going to a) be a bitch getting a booster wide enough, and b) getting a cross-over long enough to clear the tyre? I guess he's going to run disc? :-
JonMack
He will probably make a booster, and just cut up a maggie hose to make a crossover. But he is a dumb f**k to be honest, I don't see any point in it at all. EDIT: I win. :-" Edited April 1, 2005 by MonsterJ
JonPace
getting a cross-over long enough to clear the tyre? ← Why would that be difficult? just get more hosing?! Also, surely if he's getting a custom frame he'll get a custom booster to match. why are there bumps coming through the drilled holes on only one side of the rim?! man a rim that wide is pointless, nowt wrong with a good D521 Edited April 1, 2005 by JonPace
Frenchman
hey As i said in my post he is building a custom frame around the wheel so the brakes will be fine to set up. crossovers are not a problem as you can make them longer. I am not quite sure of the point but i can say one thing for sure it is different.lol cheers
Mark W
I was just thinking it'd have to be chuffin' long, that's all, meaning more chance of it getting kicked or whatever.

Tubes always seem to bulge a bit round the valve?
tank_rider
more layers of electrical or gaffer tape required to stop the uber bulge of the tube!!!! Anyway, interesting concept, could yield an interesting result, certainly will be different.
Frenchman
He will be running rimtape but wanted to see what the wheel was with tyre pumped up etc.

STEVE-0
Looks like its gonna be a lot of hassle but i must say it looks the nuts... i didnt relise until the second pic actually how wide it is....double drilled rims is a bit extreme!!! It seems alot of people get carried away when they get to drill their own rims. Ali Clarkson had a triple drilled rim when i saw him at hook woods....i was looked like a megamo rim he had drilled himself!! :- it looked sick!! mavic
Way hay Pete wright is back  . get a echo rim tut tut.
Bigman
HAHA yeh, i drilled that rim, it is f**kin massove, but when built to a wheel, it doesn't "feel" that heavy, it is strange, be glad to see it once he has it in his custom frame. Mark W
Seeing as the tyre's only 0.02 of an inch wider than the rim, isn't it going to be Pop-off-the-rim Central as soon as you do anything remotely at an angle?

I guess only time and petes riding ability will tell.
Tomm
Hands up who thinks he'll get bored and move onto another "whacky" idea before he finishes this one? We still haven't seen his coffin PC case with watercooling and 12 fans, his bike shop, or indeed his helium-filled pashley. Ho hum
Chris@Onza rider
That looks kool and if it functions as well as it looks it should be a bomb. There are so many disadvantages but if he can overcome them all (highly unlikely) Then Well done to him. If the rim is to large in the first place what was the rim designed for? Downhill? But I didnt think Surley parts were made for Down Hill? As you can tell im still learning  Tom
Frenchman
i am pretty sure that the surly rim was designed for a snow bike. i.e. it has to be wide so it doesnt sink in the snow.
Chris@Onza rider
Cool thanks. I wouldnt have thought that as you dont regulary hear people going on about which rim to get for their snow bike. Thanks hasal. Thanks Tom
