biketrialler
Hiya, Im really confused as to if what im trying to do is possible with what ive got at the moment. This is the setup im trying to make work in a very sexeh paint drawing! All machines are running Windows XP SP2. The Dell (acting as fileserver) has the BT 600 adsl line running into it through a westell usb modem jobby. This machine is permanently on. It communicates fine in filesharing terms both over the wired network with crossover lead, and also fine over the wireless link. The problem is that internet connection sharing only seems to work for either the wired network or the wireless one - you can only enable this on one at a time so it seems. Am I missing something really obvious that lets me enable the internet for everyone? Cheers, Ben
Tomm
Am I missing something really obvious that lets me enable the internet for everyone? ← A router? (Y) I dunno what the problem is, but I'm sure it'd be solved by getting a nice router :)
Danny
Get yourself a proper modem and router :) It will save so many problems in the long run (Y) ICS for windows is so dodgey. You could try smoothwall on the dell box if you fancy playing with linux some more :D
biketrialler
Smoothwall? Would that be really hard to configure or what? And what is its support for wireless usb dongles like?
Tomm
You ought to be able to get some routing software for windows, really. I've not heard of any though...

giptown
Smoothwall is a Proxy, not just a firewall. There are also pleant of proxy servers available for Windows if you dont wish to buy a router, however you might find them more difficult to set up. biketrialler
Because im moving downstairs in my house and cant wire down to there. The idea was to keep upstairs wired as is and move my computer downstairs using the wireless link I bought. However the problem is that Windows doesnt support Internet connection sharing (ICS) for two connections - only the wired OR wireless at once. If anyone knows of a workaround that'd be great, otherwise I will end up getting another wireless USB dongle and having a 3 pc ad hoc network :-
Tomm
Try a proxy on the server PC? Gets a bit complicated, because you have to assign that PC a static IP, and then point the other PCs towards that IP as their "gateway" to the internet. Should work though. TheChai
i need help, probably not the same situation but still. my computers were sharing internet and files until i did something with the fire wall, i have got windows sp2 downstairs and windows xp upstairs, the internet sharing is still working fine but i cant transfer files between the computers which is really annoying. i have re-set up my router and done a network setup for file sharing on both computers, but nothing is appearing. the main drives in both computers are showed as being shared but i cant view them from the opposite computer. need help <_<
