ERgoSuM
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the best place to get a laptop for £400-£500, basically i want the best i can get for my money. Its not for any specific task, so an all round good spec. would be what im looking for. All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. MadManMike
Last December I got a laptop of the following spec from eBay for £550: Pentium4 2.6Ghz ATI Radeon 9000 512 MB RAM 40GB Hard Drive 15" TFT Screen + Loads of useless software free that is gathering dust in my drawers like: "Super Calendar Designer Professional Extra Mega Design Pro Version 2 Mark 6 Home Designer Edition build 9 Beta 4 2005 XP" Ok, so it's not actually called that, but thats the kind of crap they give you. Swize
When you say all round , try and be more persiffic (Y) , do you wanna do alot of viedo editing if so you will need a big hdd. If you wanna play some new game will need a decent 3dfx card. http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/NBrange.html?SAT That seems to be quite a good one! laptop 2 That also would od the job :o . But if you can put down what you mostly wanna do on ur laptop i can then have a look arround to see what may best suit you . The laptops for my sisters fiance, at a guess id say he wouldnt be doing any video editing, he will probably be doing some photo editing, so enough cpu and ram to make that as quick as poss(for adobe photoshop), he will be using microsoft progs like word, to do work related stuff, he'll probably play some DVD's and music, so decent enough sound/video cards, and a dvd-rom, and a cd-rw to burn things to cd ( i doubt hed need a dvd-rw drive) , he'll probably play some games, but i dont think thats his primary concern, so it doesn't need to be insane with gfx cards, cpu speed, ram etc. Like i said, a kind of all round machine, within £400-£500. At a guess: Windows OS, XP. CPU @ >1.5 ghz RAM > or = 256mb HD ~40 gb 64mb or greater GFX card That kind of base would probably suit him, its just a case of which company offers the best laptop at that spec OR better, within the price range. Cheers for your help Sam :o
Tomm
I would say at least 512mb of ram in this day and age. 256 feels really slow in WinXP, but 512 is fine, as long as you're not doing anything too intensive. Be aware that the Intel Centrino processors seem really slow, but they're a lot better than the MHz alone would suggest. I.e. A centrino 1.4Ghz is a lot better than a Pentium 1.4GHz. Centrinos are supposed to be good for battery life too - something which is certainly worth thinking about. Macs have good battery life... Tomm
Cheek out www.ebay.co.uk searching through there you culd pick up a deal . ← Yup, especially HP (And other brands) auctions. They sell reconditioned laptops with a full HP official warrantee, I think. Sometime's they're not amazingly cheap, but you can get a bargain if you're lucky
ERgoSuM
Thanks for the help guys. I'll check out Ebay for some good deals. How good are returns policies via ebay bought laptops should the need arise? Thanks again Sam.

Thanks again Sam. ← Like I say, I think the ones bought from manufacturers' auctions should have a full 12 months warranttee. Wouldn't trust other eBay vendors so much though, although you should be able to send it straight back to the manufacturer if any problems arose.
