rocktrials
i was looking in to getting some shin/knee pads as the weather is getting better and shorts will be worn, and as ive purchased a bmx and will be jumping, thought about getting some. do you think its a good idea? ive been looking at 2 makes 661: pads and roach: pads i like the 661's, and also does anyone know other places for decent shorts like knee/just below knee length, maybe padded? like zonic ones here: shorts cheers. TheMunn
If it were me I would go for the 661 armour, I know a whole load of people who use, and love, their stuff. As for short's I would try to keep away from the downhill style race short's as they are heavy and sweaty, oakley do some good short's with vent's etc. have a look around for some. nbr-chris
Spend a little bit more and get Dainese. Lasts longer, lot more comfortable, doesn't move around and better ventilated than any of the 661, fox or axo pads i've used. Never used roach but i'd rather go with Dainese as millions of people use them with virtually no problems. From the 2 you've listed i'd go with 661 but seriously consider the dainese
montybiketrial
Dainese are the shizzzzz. My knee and leg armour where immence in every aspect... but pricey!
tank_rider
i have a set of dianese pro-air knee/shin guards, wore them for a bit when i was learning, but found they are too bulky now. Maybe try and find some just shin guards, as it is the knee part that makes compressing/folding yourself up quite difficult.

delusional
I think personally I'd go for something a bit lighter. A combination of the 661 veggie knee and shin guards would probably be a good set to get. That way they're fairly light and unobtrusive and you can wear just shin pads or just knee pads if you find you don't need both. When I first started riding I bought a set of the Roach Indy knee and shins and found them far too inhibiting for trials. While they'd probably be fine for downhill/freeride mtb stuff I think they might be a bit limiting for BMX as well.
Janson
I'm using a set of '05 661 Veggie Knee pads and a pair of Fox shin guards. The 661 knee pads are really good! Flexible, quite thin but still softens the blow loads. I wear them under the trousers no problems, and they've saved my knees a fair few times.. The Fox shinguards are quite nice aswell. Plastic and neoprene has saved my shins numerous times when riding trials and bmx... Separate pads are best, as you can choose how much you want to wear... Good in the summer etc.
