<<(Tom_182)>>
I have got a Shimano STX RC ( I think ) freewheel hub and I was wondering if I can lock it up so it don’t make all. So I can run a front freewheel  Is there a way I can this ? Without extreme measures like welding it to the shell  Thanks Tom A
benno
Fill it full of gravel! (cough) I'm sure there's loads of ways to just f**k it up basically but welding is probably only the safe reliable sorta way. Ben
bluecatracingcat
Can't weld it to the shell as the sheel is alloy and the free hub steel. Take the axle out. Using a 10mm hex in the vice to remove freehub (normal thread so if the hex key is in vice pointing up and the wheel is drive side down.... turn it... umm... anti clockwise) Pull rubber seal off back of freewheel, clean away grease with nasty chemicals and a wire brush on bench grinder. Then weld a nice tidy seam around this groove, then grind it back flush so it bolts on again. Or if you just wanna do a quick not so reliable lock up. Leave the freehub on hub, with axle out get a hammer and punch and tap the bearing race clockwise, the correct shimano tool for this is hard to find. Once the bearing race and shims are off you can see the bearings and pawls. just got to bthink of a nice way of jamming them, try knocking a bunch of the bearings into the pawl gaps and put it back together without the shims (lefthand thread.) Don't know how solid that would be? :turned:
onzamad
yeh. thats how i was thinking of doing it, just bodge something under the pawls to keep them on the same engagement points in the freehub. the only prob is, them engagement points could get worn you fairly quickly, especially for trials so you may have to take it apart again and put the pawls on different engagement points. hope that helped... <<(Tom_182)>>
Ill give it a go if i can get to the pawls inside. :turned: Thanks Tom A
Danny
Fill it full of epoxy/araldite? The best option is just to get it welded :turned:
munkee
id say some epoxy would to it under the pawls after all its only to keep them open or you could cut some small bits of nail to same size as springs and put them in same position as springs then glue the whole lot just to make sure. Swindon rider
Just take the freehub of, Then weld it shut, Ive seen it done before. The pawls Will still engage IF the weld were to break. Stu
