echobikes
Me and my housemates ordered a new broadband installation cd about 5 weeks ago.... Phoning back once a week to be pomised the cd within the next week but noughts happened. Eventually got the excuse that they havn't had any cd's but have some now and will have the cd sent off immediately. 2 weeks later any CD? Nope! Just wonderin... Has anyone else had problems with NTL recently?
Tomm
NTL are renowned for having shit customer service, so it's not really a surprise. But why do you want a CD in the first place? The only thing you need it for is so you can activate the modem. But if you've already done that (I.e. the modem works?), then there's no reason to have the disk. All it does is install shit you don't need (Perfect example being that crap "Broadband Medic" that does f**k all, but still decides it needs to stay running on your computer all the time...), so just don't worry?
echobikes
I need it to install NTL as my ISP onto my computer. We had a copy but my housemate lost it so we neeed to phone up get another one. How do you mean it should all be on the modem? All the modem does is provide a medium between your computer and the cables outside the house, isn't the CD needed to install NTL as an ISP? Just like for freeserve or AOL you'd get an installation CD... Cheers for the help though.
biketrialler
Create a new dial up connection that dials to the port 0,38 with your NTL username and password.. simple as that. Thats how it works, you can use that to connect to AOL even!

Turn on your PC, with modem and everything on. Go to the ntlhome.com page, and register your connection if you haven't done already. I've not once used a CD for NTL, and neither has my friend. Ever. Stop listening to NTL, there a f**king wank ISP. If i could change, i would. However, the trouble of changing lines, TV company, phone company etc is to much hassle, and to expensive, so i will stick with wank uptime, wank after sales and wank ratios

All the CD does is put the settings right and install the aforementioned crap. If you know what settings to put in, you don't need the CD (Other than to activate the modem, a one-off thing). Oh, OK, it appears I was wrong about even needing the CD to activate the modem. Stupid engineer told me you needed it. Having said that, the engineer didn't know what a router was, I'm not sure why I listened to him at all  I've not really had too many problems with NTL. As far as I know, there's been no downtime in the 6 months or so we've had it.
Brian Bleech
NTL have been alright with us too really ,the only downtime was a few weeks ago (when all that bad weather cause a problem somewhere and we lost cable and internet for about an hour) and when we forget to pay the bill, they never send us the correct warnings though. We are getting upgraded to a 2 meg connecting soon too  for free. But whats with the 'tv on demand' and the boody films are in widescreen now, what about the poor sods who don't have a widescreen tele  its annoying! Tomm
We are getting upgraded to a 2 meg connecting soon too  for free. How much are you paying? Because we're on 1.5MB, and it's £38/month. That seemed reasonable 6months ago, but broadband prices have come down loads, and it's not so cheap any more.

Probably could get better broadband deals, but not much including everything else! oh 750k broadband at moment, its fast enoguh for me  mike

Nah, you don't need it. Have you got a router? ← Got a wireless router but I'll be getting the net working through the modem first then I'll implement the router into everything. Cheers for the help guys mucho appreciated!
Tomm
So why isn't it working at the moment? What are your TCP/IP properties? (Control Panel, Network Connections, right click the Local area network connection, properties, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), properties). As far as I know, the NTL modems have DHCP build into them, so all you need to do is "Obtain an IP adress automatically" and the same with DNS server. Although if you're networking and you've already "activated" the modem, you may as well set it all up for the network, save you doing it twice
echobikes
I've saved all this to flash drive so I've got all your advice. Can't get you answers as I'm at uni right now and obviously no internet at home but if home net doesn't work I'll ask again once I cycle back in. Tomm
If you really want the disk, I have it. I can probably MSN it for you to burn if you want?
Alexx
NTL cable services = pile of shit. For me the broadband internet isn't too bad once you get it up and running yourself, with your own settings etc. But the cable TV, my god what a pile of SHIT!! I swear to god they produce the remotes + boxes for 5p a go. We've had the engeer out so many times, new boxes etc, and it's just utter crap, it must crash every 5-10 channels, everyone i know on it around here has the same problem too. echobikes
Hmmmm... OK I just connected the modem to the computer via ethernet and it works fine... Seems i never did need the CD... Contrary to what NTL's been telling me! Cheers for all the help.

It can find 5 channels, no more (Despite the fact that we live in the centre of Manchester and the coverage is fine). The best/worst thing, though: When you walk too heavily anywhere near it, it stops working, the picture f**ks up. However, most times you can easily rectify it by stamping on the floor a bit more :D Hmmmm... OK I just connected the modem to the computer via ethernet and it works fine... Whats the deal with it being upgraded? And Tomm aparently you can pay a one off fee of £35 and get your 1.5mb line upgraded to a 3mb line and still pay the £37.99 a month thats what my mates doing. My broadbands £27.99 a month I think.
echobikes
I pay 20 for cable, 20 for broadband and however many phone calls we make... Thats 750k broadband with family package on cable.
