Hotmail is Messenger. If you want to use gMail, you need to sign up to a .NET passport using your gMail address. There was a thread on this a while back, try searching for it. Also try here. Simon
It's another google tool for collecting as much user information as possible. ← I know for a fact your more smart then caving in to conspiracy theories, especially ones based around total crap. Yes they can keep e-mails on their systems for up to 20 years. (not actually sure on this figure). However, hotmail does this too. I don't see anyone having a go at hotmail for it. They keep the e-mail purely for special cases. If an e-mail can be used in evidence in a trial or such like. The related ads are taken from that instance of the e-mail, and only the e-mail body text. No other information is parsed through, or collected. Google themselves have heard of these rumours, and have updated their ToS including information on how data is stored and used. And to be honest, what sort of admin goes through thousands of user's e-mails. Even if he did, for what purpose, and its not as though he could do anything with that information. If your important enough to have a need to send super secret information via e-mail, then you wont use a public one like gmail. Meh. Gmail rocks. From what I understand of it Google have explicitly stated that they will never delete any email that passes through their servers and have a reputation for never deleting *any* information at all. While they were only a search engine this was a little disconcerting (pretty much every search you have ever done still stored somewhere on their servers?) but the inefficiency of tracking data to users made it a much lesser problem. Now with their extensions into email and tentative moves to desktop searching they have access to an unprecedented quantity of information - the sort of thing many big advertising companies would give both their legs for. It may well be that Google have no intention of using any of this data in an unethical manner, but I'm personally not comfortable with the idea of any company (no matter how benevolent) storing that much personal information on me. As for admins going through thousands of emails, you have to remember that we're talking about a company that are one of the best in the world at making sense of the mess of data on the internet. If anyone can get some meaningful data from a few million emails it's probably them. In general I'm not really opposed to Google, and I'm certainly very impressed with some of the software they produce (I was going to quote GmailFS here as a really f**king cool little toy, unfortunately though it seems it's not actually written by google). I think I just spend too much time reading El' Reg :) Edited February 26, 2005 by delusional

I also don't think google would turn all there data to 3rd party companies. Saying that, lokitorrent is a prime example of "dont trust anyone but yourself". I was always looking at that gmail drive. I really can't see it working well, especially as it has to be restricted to your upload/download speed of the internet. Indeed, they did'nt make that, but considering they just bought this massive 500 acre or something plot of land in the USA, they must be making something (Y) If gmail do end up making a browser, as has been rumoured for some time now, i think this information gathering rumour will just explode. As then gmail not only have e-mail, what your search for, but also what you browse possibly. Meh, i must admit, i try to keep all "sensative" material out of my gmail account.
