monkeyseemonkeydo
I recently put a Hope Mono Trial on the front of my Python. It works fine, plenty of power etc but if you hold the brake on loosely and rock the bike backwards and forwards the pads move in the caliper by about 1-2mm, as the pad retaining pin is smaller than the hole in the pad itself. This results in a nice 'BANG' as the pad reaches its limit. Is this a common thing with the Trial brake? I've been a Hayes person until now and this doesn't exactly reassure me of the quality of Hope gear. Dave
AdamR28
Do you mean... hard to explain... as you pull the brake on, theres a 'click' as you overcome resistance during the travel of the lever?
011001000110010101110010
My hope mini does this Dave, the caliper has worn slightly meaning the pads no long fit nice and tight in the caliper. So they is a bit of movment, Adam mine clicks aswell :( Edited February 18, 2005 by derf
Lukeee
My mate has the same problem... You are not alone Dave!
AdamR28
Adam mine clicks aswell :( ← Is it a 'creak' or a 'click'? The 'click' i refer to is when an amount of resistance is overcome in the lever... Theres an easy fix for both btw B)
Ashley Smith
think about it the pads need clearance otherwise they woudnt move out if they were a perfect fit, nothing to worry about regards ash
AdamR28
think about it the pads need clearance otherwise they woudnt move out if they were a perfect fit ← Yep, thats true, however Dave seemed to describe two seperate issues... Edit: Reading again, seems like he's on about 'pad wobble' only... can't say ive noticed it while riding (can get the pads to 'knock' a little if i try though, while not riding the bike). Top brake otherwise! :(
monkeyseemonkeydo
The problems the clearance between the pad retaining pin and the hole in the pads through which it passes. This allows the pads to rock between the limits and makes a quite harsh 'crack' when there's a bit of force going through it. I'm probably just too much of a perfectionist but I've run a Marta, hayes, a louise 2k and now a louise 04 FR and a mono trial and the Hope is the only one to do this. (which have clearance inside the caliper). The pin is a loose fit through the holes in the pads - its only there to stop the pads falling out. Im sure Hope would try and sort something for you if you get in touch :(
monkeyseemonkeydo
I e-mailed them last week and have had no response. I guess I could go lo-tech and pick up that thing you talk into though... Cheers Dave
011001000110010101110010
How do i sort out the clicking then? Its just one of those niggly little problems which I'd like to sort out. Edited February 18, 2005 by derf
AdamR28
How do i sort out the clicking then? ← Is it a click, a squeak, or the pad wobble Dave describes? And where does it come from?
nb88
My lever used to click and creak and whatever other noise, so i just sprayed some lube in there and its been fine since.
matthewholdsworth
yeah mine clicks a bit when track standing with front brake slightly on. i wouldnt worry as ash says. also my mates does the same thing still both brakes work brilliantly. its prob something to do with the fact the pads work with magnets not springs like the other hope brakes. i tend to ignore rattles cracks and squeeks on my bike though, life is more carefree that way :("
011001000110010101110010
click as you pull the lever in, louder when the wheel is not turning. Sounds like the little U spring between the pads its not sitting right...

Lee_Buchanan
mine used to click, but i think it was the pivot int lever not sitting in properly when i pulled the lever in it clicked, Could be that ? 011001000110010101110010
mine is a hope mini, old school one. Sorry for any confusion, but I did say it erlier. :(

011001000110010101110010
Lube it up then? What did you do to get rid of it?
Dan Hardman
i have the same problem, well its not really a problem im my opinion, but when you lock the brake there is still movment in the pads when you rock the bike back and forward with the brake on, and as a result you get a knocking sound, presumably fromthe pads moving back an forth :( hope that makes sense
monkeyseemonkeydo
I know it's not a problem but it is kind of annoying and doesn't fill me with confidence. Dave BTW, just had a reply from Hope (they must screen the forums!) so I retract my previous minor dig!
Mark W
Hey Dan, I get the same with my front Magura and some of the V-brakes, it's just the little bit of leeway with the manufacturing tolerances for the pads/caliper I guess, and 'cos there needs to be some freedom of movement anyway... Lee_Buchanan
Send lever of to hope.get them to replace the pivot for a new one. lee...........
