I started trials-shack with the sole intention of keeping it 100% free, as most of you know.

I know some objected to me opening donations, and i can fully understand that.

However, you must understand, trials-shack costs me £60 a month to run, and will be costing an extra %80 next month (and thereafter) when i buy a new server. This puts a lot of strain on my bank.

As not only do i have to fund the server, aswell as media events such as The Bike Show, which trials-shack will be going to for the full 3 days, but also myself. Being a student, i have bills to pay :P

I would also like to make perfectly clear that this charge will not be forced. If you do not wish to pay, then eengoedidee is just over there to your left.

Also, i want you all to know that i am 100% not happy with charging, but i was completly not expecting it to be this much of a success. Saying that, there is'nt much competition :P

Having to buy a new server after only 7 months was also quite a surprise to me.

Anywhom, the charge wont be taking effect next month, but April. This gives users 1 month to find other hosting if they wish to, or 1 month to come up with the first £2 charge (subject to change, but will not be more), or take advantage of some our pay in advanced pay plans, which will be unveiled next month.

Onto my next matter of this post. The FTP accounts will be un-restricted, so people like akpv who have uploaded 2.5gb :- will be allowed to continue to do so. The no website rule will stay in effect. We will also be offering hosting for people who wish to host websites, more on that when new server is running.

Users not in the UK, can send money via bank transfer, paypal or any other means to which i am open to suggestions for.

Can i also add, downloading will be 100% free.

So vote away, and discuss, as all of you know, i appreciate any comments, good or bad.

If the vote turns out that no one would pay, then i will not buy a new server, and trials-shack will close early, on a monthly basis for the foreseeable future.

A few people have also suggested concerns about account sharing. If you account share, you are effectivly stealing from trials-shack, as you are taking away money that is needed, and could be used to fund future expansions (which will be happening :P" ). Account sharing will be highly frowned upon, and if find to be doing so, the offending account will be locked.

Sorry for long post :P

Critisize/abuse away, im expecting it. :P

How about doing it per annum? I am happy to pay for my FTP account, I just think that people would prefer to paylike £25 a year for it, instead of having the hassle of £2 a month. Well, thats me anyway :-

Thats going to be in pay plans

£2.00/month

£5.00/3 months

£10.00/6 months

Im afraid i cant allow 12 months in advanced payment. Unless a lot of people request it ofcourse.

Well if I was making a lot of videos and uploading alot then yeah I would definatley pay..

I do have a Trials-Shack account but I only use it rarely and when I do I only upload very small files. Biggester so far is around 8meg.

So no I would not pay 2 quid a month if I was only going to use it every 2 months or more..

Perhaps you could set something up so that when you upload you pay a certain price depending on the file size and/or a monthly upload/download limit?

700+ files and 18gb of data, thats a lot of videos to charge for :-

I can 100% understand your point, but there is no easy answer. :P

How about you pay a set amount for one video, this video would be sent to me, if its sub 20mb, then a one of charge for however months of it being up is charged?

This means you dont pay for an FTP account that is un-used, and the video can be removed without hassle once the time is up.

Do you download though, Sam?

Bandwidth is what costs... and its what you use up when you download!

I think Si has done it this way, because it would be tricky to keep tabs on uploads...

Yes I download, but again only small amounts. Later today I'm gonna start the download of Jonnys TM1 zip file which is just over 400meg and again this will be the largest thing I have ever downloaded to my PC. My 56k connection does limit this obvioulsy and If I had broadband then I would be downloading a lot more.

So perhaps a download fee depending on how much you download, rather than making everyone pay that may not use it as much as somebody else.

what about previously uploaded items will they remain on the server ?

ill pay a year :-

Yes. Nothing changes. Accounts that dont pay will have their folder suspended so no videos can be downloaded, and the account frozen. Nothing gets deleted.

damn straight lol

si is it possible to buy a server with unlimited bandwidth that charges by what is downloaded so it cant be exceeded?

The new server has un-metered bandwidth. It is impossible to go over bandwidth limit, as there is'nt one. I can only max out the 20mbit line. Which would be quite hard to do every second for a whole month :-

Unlimited bandwidth eh? Subject to reasonable usage conditions? :-

Yeah i would be happy to pay 2 pounds (why doesn't my keyboard at work have a pound sign) a month for uploading! I would rather pay it in one chunk though!

Also yeah I think it would be better to pay for uploading rather than downloading! As paying for downloads would probably put people off downloading vids and if no-one downloads them, no-one is gonna bother making them!!

Sorry I haven't read your post completely, but we should definately all chip in to support Trials-shack, which is in turn doing a sterling service enabling us all to download the latest riding vids from this thriving UK (and world) scene :-

One point though, I've got an account which presently hasn't been used, but I had intended making it available to all the 20 riders I support for them to upload their videos as they see fit. Maybe there should be a staggered payment scheme set up because in theory there could be 20x the normal amount of vids on one account.

Maybe it should be 20p (or less) an upload or there should be a similar scheme based on the number of uploads done on an account?

£2 a month for an account is a steal!

Steve

P.S. Sorry if someone has already said this, I'm in a rush and haven't got time to read the whole thread :">

i think what you've suggested is great for the majority of users but there is the problem that:

for users like me who never ever upload and only download sporadically (sp) £2 every month may be a bit much. could you say pay £2 for 20 downloads and 5 uploads or something like that? if its too much hassle then don't worry i'll just make a list of what i wana download and then pay for one months use and do all my downloading in that one month... (sorry if you dont like that idea but thats what some people will do)

Huh :P

I said there would be no charge for downloading :S

Only FTP account owners would need to pay, downloaders would'nt have to worry at all.

Steve, doing it by uploads is near on impossible, and would not only require some server side script, which i not only know sod all about, but even if i did, would take atleast a few months to get working. Nice suggestion, but just not fesable :)

Also, i can do account exemptions, so you can have permission for those 20 riders to upload videos, as its a special case.

Will draw up proper rules and clauses, and options later on.
