tank_rider
thing is its sooooo noisy  do i need all these fans ? and theres a big fan on the gfx card........... Dave ← there are a few options to make your computer quieter. 1. Buy a fan controller into which the fans will plug. I have 4 of my fans controller using an coolermaster aerogate. 2. Buy quieter fans. I recommend panaflo fans found at http://www.dorothybradbury.co.uk/, they are quiet and remain quiet throughout their life. If you dont want to get those then you should be looking for fans that have a noise level of less than 25dB if possible. 3. Undervolt the fans you already have (case fans only). The easiest method of doing this is to swap a couple of the pins around in a 4 pin molex to fan converter to make the black ground wire sit in the place of the red 5V wire. This will make the fans run off 7V and be a lot quieter, however they wont move as much air as a result. Also you MUST NOT connect anythin other than fans to the other end of the connector else you WILL kill whatever it is (cd drive, HD etc) Ill post a couple of pics of my PC up once i have the 2 120mm fans installed in the roof. tank_rider
Poop pics attached, its not quite finished yet, in terms of some more filling needs to be done. Results are not to bad visually, but get a 3-4 degree drop in case temps and 2-3 drop in cpu temps. Its still a shit case to begin with so im only polishing a turn until i can be bethered to make a case in the summer. The main modding on this is the fact its overclocked to feck. biketrialler
Sold it... had no need for the games on it. Mac does everything it did, and better, so I switched, plus at the arts college im going to macs are the preferred system to use so I thought id get a head start and learn it before it gets forced on me! Im glad I switched :)
Tomm
Oh Ok. Fair enough I guess. Looks nice, how much did it set you back, and how quick it is for general pootling and photoshop/premiere stuff?
biketrialler
I got it second hand - the Mac Mini itself was £350 with the 1gb ram, tiger, etc. Note that a 1.42ghz powerPC is COMPLETELY different to the athlon/pentium naming convention. I cant remember the exact figures, but you understand the clock cycle/instruction per cycle thing, which is why intel has a higher ghz rating, but athlons get more work done per cycle... well athlons do something like 6 instructions per cycle, whereas powerPC does 19 per cycle! Real world experience...? The Mac Mini runs for me at about the same speed as my Pentium4 3.0 Shuttle. Its at least 1/3 of the size. Its very stable. I thought my shuttle was stable but this thing never has ANY errors or crashes at all! The software is the main bonus though with OSX blowing Windows into the dust with file management, ease of use etc. I know its hardly difficult to install stuff in Windows, but in OSX on the whole you just drag the program into the 'applications' folder and its installed! :( Simple pimple! The UI in general is a lot cleaner, neater, more exciting. It all makes sense. Photoshop is much the same as Windows but I find it looks/behaves better, and renders slightly faster. Rendering in 'Final Cut Pro HD' which is essentially a more advanced version of Premiere, is faster than in Windows as well. I have Microsoft Office X which deals with any college stuff. Again, the Office X for Mac has more features and is generally an improvement on the Windows one too - very strange! :) The built in internet browser, Safari works much like Firefox but better integrated with the Apple iLife suite of applications whereas on Windows Firefox still feels very standalone from the actual UI. I have no need to worry about virus or spyware threats as it simply doesnt effect OSX - as all of the bugs are written for Windows! And the BSD core is more secure than Windows in the first place. Apple seem very keen to keep their software up to date and protected, bugs fixed etc, with its second 'service pack' out sometime this week. Thats quick compared to Microsoft. Its not like ive come across loads of bugs at the moment anyway though, before people say that it needs more fixing than Windows does hence quicker releases, that just isnt the case. I adore it. Ben. Alexx
Apple do exactly what the market want. Make it as use friendly and eyecandy as they can, and it works well. In reality Apple is a better system than windows, just they're a TOTAL ripoff (benifer's sounds a good deal though - and the mac mini isn't as pricey as the other stuff), and they just aren't as well supported. I've never tried the mac mini, but we have imacs and powerbooks at collage, they seem pretty neat, though apple benchmark their processors way off what they are in reality :) Not sure how they get away with that. The whole macs are more stable thing is deffo true for the average home user, most macs seem super stable (bar networked g5 powermacs which seem to crash all the damn time lol), but at industry standard it's a little void since a well setup windows workstation is just as stable, well, pretty much un-crashable. But in the real world, I get pissed off with Linux and the fact that everything's in the wrong place and it's just not as easy to find programs. I suppose I might like to try a Mac, but I think I'd get annoyed very quickly.

I think half of the whole macs are stable thing is because you buy it prebuilt with 100% tested together hardware most people have problems with windows crashing because of cheap or faulty memory. Windows is good, but only if you look after it properly. (P.s. my computers being a royal pain in the rear and BSODing all the time :))
tank_rider
I like the look and styling of Macs, but don't want to have to re-learn how to do everything on them. I also like playing with the hardware i have to get it running as fast as possible. In terms of windows itself, i haven't really got any problems with it. I haven't had a Blue screen on any of my 3 PC's running XP Pro in over a year!!!! I think this may be due to having windows installed on a seperate partition from most other things, and just being generally careful with what i install. I also have pretty tried and tested hardware that seems to work very well together, which always helps.

Dai the Socket
Lovely set-up there benifer :) I'm moving my computer into my room in a couple of weeks, buying a new mouse and re-themeing everything. Also I'm gonna buy some more pretty stuff, and generally make the computer a bit more pimp (Y) I'm buying some more Ram, just for when I'm using lots of programs at once. Also, i'm buying a wireless card so It can connect to the network wirelessly, rather than through Ethenet as it is now. It's not a problem at all at the moment, but when it's in my room it will be! Hopefully when it's in my room. I will have a f**king awesome set-up combined with a pretty nifty room and hi-fi separates selection! I'll get some pictures up when It's all sorted. Might be a couple of months now I think about it, unfortunately! Anyone want to buy an external CD Re-writer? It's La Cie, 52x32x52 times write speed, connected via Firewire and will link onto another firewire device. Writes uber fast. Anyway. Nice PC's everyone but I'd still rather have my mac :o " hehe.

biketrialler
Wow, now your computer looks like all of the other 1337core mods that you get off of ebuyer... Actually, that was harsh, im sorry, just im not a fan of all of the premodded stuff that you can get straight off the net these days. I like the fact a computer is all smart and neat, quiet...
