Bmx Questions

EDIT: Listen to poopipe he knows more than me

are you sure?

and

did I make a terrible mistake?

I just got a pair of magnesium KHE lego pedals cos that's all they had in billy's and my slimjims finally stopped rotating on the spindle as well. They seem alright -

bets on how long they'll last?

I got rid of my bmx in favour of getting a trials bike cos I never rode it. I now want a BMX again aswell as my trials bike :(

I don't know what to do, should I wise up and just be a one bike man annd stick with the monty or get a BMX and risk loosing interest in trials and becoming a BMX arsehole?

I'll be going to dundee in september and could only bring one bike, if I had a BMX it would probobly be that so trials would go down the drain during term time at least......

well i have three bikes (bmx dh and trials) so i think two is reasonable. if your going to ride them then why not?

I would definatly go with something different. High tensile frames last months. My friend had a fit one and all he did was icepicks and 180s and it just cracked all the way round the chain stay. Plus the parts on it seem a little 'cheap'.

These are the pedals. They might not be 32's but DX's for sure. As they say it on the side on them. Does anyone remember the DX red v-brakes? And levers

[edit] But according to customriders they are DX30's

Can't see the pics, but I'm gonna assume they're the Shimano DX pedals. If so, they're OK. I had a pair and before they wore to be a complete mirror finish complete with stuck-in pins on the right side, they were pretty decent. They're reknowned for the spindles just shearing though, which sucks.

real men run 2.1s

i like the look of the animal GLH .

i think everyone runs either a fly ruben or odyssey drt path on the front and a odyssey path on the back

personally i run a pair of 2.1 gusset pimps in black - not sure why, I just like them

GLH's front and rear are pretty good. I've got a GLH 2.1" up front and a 1.95" ASM rear, and the ASM is a little too slick for my liking. Got a 1.95" GLH off someone local second hand though, so we'll see how it goes with that. Up front, a 2.1" Fly Ruben would probably be awesome. If you're going for the Path tyres though, may as well get the Path Plyte. Same tyre, just lighter (Y)

Odyssey path tyres aren't all there cracked up to be. A few people round here would take a v-monster over a Path any day. Plus v-monsters are cool ^_^ Yes the Animal GLH is a good tyre. Lasts a long time as well. The KHE mac2 is also good choice for saving some weight if your into that but punctures easily. I was leaning towards a Zepplin on the rear soon.

Only problem with V-Monsters with me was just pinches. The sidewalls are piss thin, they just go...

But anyhow why don't you buy a GLH for the front and Revenge Ind's kevlar for the back. Then you can report on how good they are.

GLH (Y)

Revenge (Y)(Y)(Y)

My powerbites are creaking...Need re-greasing?

probably, mine do

but new grips dont have the palm shaped groove in them that makes them feel all lovely. I'm beginning to regret going for Berringers over another set of S&M dual-ply jobbers though.

I don't understand why people spend more than a fiver on grips. They only ever last 5 minutes with the named brands ones. I just go for cheap. My Prolite ones fiver postage with metal bar ends are so soft and have lasted sinse i can't remember.

they were only five or six quid - just like the dual ply ones which have lasted since last autumn and only died cos I tore them off the bars falling off last weekend.

. I tend to order them when i buy other stuff then leave them in the toolbox till the current pair falls off the bars - that way the postage doesn't count and I've always got a pair for emergencies.

ok, actual question this time

my powerbites have become creaky again

i've removed the arms, cleaned and regreased the tapers, changed pedals etc.

I think the creaking is coming from the threaded pedal insert cos they dont seem to be particularly well stuck in (they rotate a bit when you tighten/loosen the pedals).

before I start dismantling stuff again - how do the inserts work? are they threaded in or what? is there anything I can do to tighten them up permanantly?

Do any of you bmx guys still ride trials ?

not very often in my case - mostly cos it's no fun getting to spots for riding on the mod, bmxs are much more entertaining to just ride around on and then there seems to be a lot more you can do with them once you get wherever you're going.

I had a really good time last time I went out trialsing with Julien so I wouldn't say I'd given it up entirely but with the missus on at me to get rid of some bike stuff I'm gonna have to think about shifting the mod if I dont ride it over summer.

Powerbites tend to have their inserts die after a while. Once the insert starts moving i suggest you leave it alone. They are fixed in by magic which wears off after a while (i really mean that they are pressed in).

Although Primo are supost to be bringing out Powerbites in Magnesium with inserts that are shaped so they can't move. Genius idea really. Should be good.

I really don't like steel inserts on alu cranks... Honestly, I'd rather have aluminium threads, strip them, and then get them helicoiled or retapped.. I've got these problems on my Koxx-One cranks.

But, question time! :turned:

After having sorted out a great deal of things... and my HoldFast coming in a week or two, I need to decide on which bars to get for it...

Here are my options:

Odyssey Skim Milk

Mutiny Captain

Colony Unlucky 13 Guettler

Odyssey is 41 Thermal, and has a lifetime warranty, nice one. Whereas the Colonys and Captains are 4130 and don't feature lifetime warranties. Still, I am stuck between the 3 of them, and can't quite decide. I am totally unclear about the rise and backsweep of each bar, and what kind of an effect this really has on the feel of the bike. Judging from trials, bigger rise means easier to pull up, generally speaking... but how about backsweep?

As for tyres it's either Odyssey Aitkens or Odyssey Plyte Paths... Bearing in mind I am predominantly a street rider. Hmm....

Odyssey's warranty is very good so if you like to throw bikes then these might be good to you. As for the Colony bars they don't seem to nice. With only 7.3" rise you would need a top loader for them to feel nicer (well i would anyway). I don't know what the Mutiny bar spec is as i can't get on the site or see them anywhere else.

But my next choice of bars will be the older style T1's, Alliance or some Scerbo hoppin' bars. I am currently on Macneil lighter 5 bars which are a little different to your average bar. But most bars are around 7.5 to 8 inches tall, have 12 degree backsweep and about 10 upsweep.

Tyre wise... The Aitken's i haven't a clue sorry but the old Path's i wouldn't use anymore. The dirt Path i've seen slip when it should of gripped and the Path (rear) sidewall is pooish. But being a lighter version with less/weaker sidewall perhaps? then that would be a no go especially with pegs.

The Animal tyre is a must, lasts ages, grippy and real fast rolling.

  • 2 weeks later...
Curiosity:

Does anyone here actually run chain tugs on their frame?

Still debating whether to run them or not. Mind, I am pegless..

Nope

28t chainring + ....T freewheel = Light, But nice gearing?

Light? It what way? Weight saving = not much Light gearing = very

I doubt riding back from 180s are very nice especially down a ramp. I wouldn't ever do it. Good for tech stuff though.

Not bothered about weight, Ive had some f*cking heavy bikes haha! Light as in, A nice gear, Not so hard its like a 48t chainring, but not as light as a trials gear! Just a good alrounder to go with 28t chainring :)

my "bottom bracket" keep cumming loose?

its a 3 peice crank, but it doesnt seem to be sealed? anyway to stop this? :(

also anybody got ne help on nailing wips?, i can get the bike to spin but i send my legs to far away and land in pile on the floor:(

get a sealed BB or you'll just be buggering about with locknuts etc. constantly - should only be about £20

I can only do footjammy whips on the ground where it's safe which is a bit different but a hefty pull back on the bars when the bike's about halfway round usually brings it back to where your legs are. Perhaps you're kicking too hard and not using your arms enough - you might be going the wrong way too - most people kick with the back foot.

I dunno, too scared to do them off anything high
