Rip
https://news.sky.com/story/cyclists-could-face-speed-limits-and-may-need-number-plates-reports-say-12674899 Speed limits for road cyclists I totally get, if a car has to do 20mph on a certain road then so should cyclists but the whole notion that all cyclists (assuming MTBs, street trials bikes, bmx's and trials bikes as well, because they use the pavements and roads a fair bit too) have to display number plates that are readable from a distance (so fairly big plates) and assuming also readable by ANPR like car plates is just ridiculous. /In before drilling number plates to make them lighter
craigjames
Doesn't seem to be a very practical solution that's for sure. I can't see the police having much appetite to enforce it either, they can't catch burglars or muggers, so I doubt they'll be running after cyclists for not having a number plate.
aener
Pretty sure they dredge this shit up every few years just to look like they're doing something and it never goes anywhere. If a police car pulled you over and dished out a fine for speeding or running a red, fine. Don't disagree with that. Number plates would be entirely unenforceable though. Look at how "illegal" the electric scooters you see absolutely f**king everywhere are. (Not to mention the plates are entirely the reporter's invention. Even the article says "dude said 'there are questions about how that would be done'". Total click-bait. What a surprise.) If you can't even police the people in cars that already have these systems in place and are much harder to get hold of etc., how the f**k do they hope it will be any different for cyclists after introducing a system that will face huge opposition to introduction?
Rip
Probably totally won't happen, it's just an insight into the type of ideas that are being banded around by people who are clearly out of touch with most of the real world. Maintenance Justice
It’s just Shapps pandering to the lowest common denominator of Mail readers which are so low they can see the underside of the barrel. As @aener says a conservative with job insecurity rolls this out every so often to curry favour with the pastel coloured trouser party demographic. The massive elephant in the room is that, to license and register a vehicle and to insure it there needs to be an agreed standard of manufacture and function. This would inevitably write off 99% of all cycles as illegal and only fit for use on private land. It would also obliterate cheap bikes and generally shaft the industry massively. To boot the cost of administering this would be so monstrous that it would be cheaper just to run cyclists over. Basically it’ll never happen and if it ever did people will ignore it for its stupidity.
