TRP 2.3mm rotors for trials

Have any of you street warriors out there tried TRPs new 2.3mm thick rotors? I plan on ordering one next time I need a rotor, but at the moment I don't yet need one. Hopefully they'll offer less twist. Anyone tried them? I think they go up to 220mm in size.

Which brakes are you planning on using them with?

The only thing that would put me off them a bit is the surface area of the braking portion of the rotor. Whenever I've tried rotors like that with a lot of material there and/or a fairly consistent outer profile, the bite of the brake has usually suffered. There are those smaller drilled holes, but the bigger cut-outs you get in some Magura/Hope rotors really do allow the brake to bite that much better and give a crisper feel. That material vs. no material is a trade-off though, so at least the hold should be good with them.

I'm pretty much MT5s all around with 1 or 2 MT4s. I usually use Magura Storm HC or Hope symmetric rotors. I'm about to order some of Galfer's Wave rotors in 2.0 as well. BBB pads or Magura 9.P all around.

Jeez, setting up MT5s with an even thicker rotor gives me the shivers, haha. If you're looking for a stiffer rotor the MDR-C rotors are really good, although I appreciate there's a bit more weight to them than you're likely to want. I use them with my MT5s and Magura Race pads and they've been sweet. Could never really get on with the Performance pads, they just lacked a bit of 'oomph' for me.

I hate to say it, but you're right about me and the MDR-C rotors  When I first saw them I really didn't like the aesthetics and when I saw the weight I decided my HC rotors were fine! Honestly I haven't had any issues with my HC rotors in 180 or 203; I just like trying new stuff and these are $30 compared to trying new pedals or a new fork at over $100+.  I must have some special kismet with MT5s. I always come back to them and they've always been 110% for me.

Do you know anything about the Galfers? I think I've seen them in some street vids.

To be fair, my latest MT5s on my MTB have been really good. Much less hassle than they were on my Arcade at any rate! The MDR-Cs have been on my MTB, I use the Storm HCs on my Arcade and I found they were fine for me.

I've used some non-Galfer rotors that had a really similar profile to that and they sucked. The design was different though and I imagine the Galfer rotors will be better quality steel, so hopefully they'll be better (Y)

Did you consider the Trickstuff Dächle or Dächle UL? They are 2.05mm thick (if the diameter is superior to 160mm for the UL) and the UL version has a lot of cut-outs.

They have also a good call. A friend of mine prefers the Dächle to the Shimano XT. They are quite expensive though. I stick to the Shimano RT66.

I read the press release for Trickstuff's new 4 piston brake caliper. It's $1000. I'll pass on Trickstuff. One 6 piston Racingline caliper on my VW GTI is less than $1000. With pads. I'll take some of whatever they're smoking, but I can't support those prices.

I've been using the TRP R1 rotor on the rear for a good while now on my Hex. Was bending Magura HC rotors for breakfast, even when just locking the brakes and not hitting them, and have only smoked one TRP so far, when I landed right on top of the rotor. But nothing would have survived that.

I like them. They're pretty cheap, they're noticeably more solid then thinner rotors, and brake power is the same as Magura rotors. No issues at all either setting them up with Magura, Hayes and Hope brakes.

The prices of the brakes are quite crazy I agree. On the other side, they are made in Germany in the black forest, with high quality standard, good material and respect of the environment (at least they communicate on this). It is a niche product too. I doubt the 6 piston caliper of your VW has the same quality.

The rotors are also made in Germany. They are more expensive than other brand but they are still affordable.

(For my hobbies, I prefer to buy a product which is locally produced and/or in respect to the environment. This is just my hobby, it is not so important if I do not ride the best bike ever. There is more to get from training than from better parts. But this is just my opinion. I love to try new stuff though!)
