Matt24.
Hey all, I recently built up an on one steel hard tail, to keep it simple at the start I built up as a single speed machine however where I have moved to has more hills than I used to encounter and more road in between trails so I’d like to go faster and slower now! My mtb knowledge is circa 2008 so we’ll put it the loop. What should I be looking at for a geared setup - ideally single ring up front with whatever is a typical setup at the rear? Any suggestions advice helpful.
AdamR28
32 up front and something like 11-42 at the rear works well.
isitafox
Can keep it relatively cheap with a long cage 11spd rear mech and 10spd cassette and shifter. Stick an 11/46 on the back with a 32 chainring and you're pretty much set for anything.
Matt24.
Cheers both - saw an advent x micro shift which seems to get good reviews for £135 for chainring, shifter, derailleur and chain ring which seems reasonable 11-48 t I think. Anything better to look out for brand and model wise @Adam@TartyBikes @isitafox
isitafox
That looks like a great deal and decent reviews. Wish I'd spotted it when I was building up the kids bikes!
Matt24.
Yeah - I don’t want to spend a fortune as not sure how much I’ll really use the bike but want something to work and that seems to be ok. Thanks for the info..
marg26
Ah Advent looks interesting. Recently wrote my 9 speed Shimano derailleur off and decided to try singlespeed but not taken with it. Where's a good place to get them? Matt24.
To be honest after reading good things about them in struggling to find them! Going to have a hunt and will let you know if I find anything on here
isitafox
Found a supplier with them in stock but shifter, mech and cassette are looking like £180. If you end up buying seperately I'd go for Sunrace MX3 11-46t cassette, any Shimano long cage 11spd mech and any 10spd shifter then probably a Raceface or Superstar narrow wide chainring
AdamR28
I'm a bit out of touch with drivetrains, sorry, last bike with gears came complete and since then they've all been singlespeed! Mix and match like Dave mentioned is probably the way to go given availability of parts at the moment. Don't rule out 2nd hand and 9 or 10 speed either.
