AdamR28
8.58kg in the photo above. Popped sidehops (edit, haha, the filter for S1D - as in short for a side hop and the name of a Rockshox fork - is still on!) on today and full mudguards, about 9.8kg now. Ali C
seriously impressed Adam! Not sure your thoughts but I'm sure if you boshed together some words and these pictures into an article for Pinkbike they'd snap it up...it's a great achievement and lots of interesting aspects I'm sure plenty of people would love to see.
AdamR28
You reckon? I'll give them a shout then. Cheers! I still think you could make a good video for your channel with these Ali... early next year when things are quieter I'd be up for a collaboration... Ali C
At first I wasn't really that confident in the strength but after seeing the work you've put in and the strength tests I'm more confident now and I'd love to do a collab!

Even that reprobate Travis has been on pinkbike! In all honesty though hand built steel hardtails seem pretty popular even if your build isn't necessarily aimed at the usual demographic Edited December 9, 2021 by forteh

Just write up a 'blog' then send it to the PB moderators to review. Definitely they'd be interested. 1
AdamR28
Well the wheels are still alive after 20odd miles including a bit of light trialsing... they have both come a tiny bit out of true (less than 2mm) which I put down to differing rates of bedding in for each spoke and eyelet. Hopefully one last fettle and they'll be reet. Hard to say how they ride exactly as there have been so many changes compared with what I'm used to (more modern forks, lighter rims, lighter bars, bigger tyres, bigger diameter wheels, lower tyre pressures) but the bike does have a lovely general compliance about it in the directions it needs to. I don't usually use Strava but do stick it on every now and again to compare significant bike changes and see how my fitness is getting along, and PRd by a few seconds on a fairly fast ~1:20min descent (despite dreadful conditions) - the rough final section felt much smoother than I remember! Despite the muck, they've come up clean after a hose down too. Winner. Will give them some more stick and report back again soon
AdamR28
Found one spoke thats had a scuff... no drop in tension, but will keep an eye on it. Will be a good test! And thought this video might help convey them better than photos.
Swoofty
Needs a belt drive to be fully eccentric ;-) Very trick looking ride to be sure. Well done Adam.
AdamR28
Thank you! I do actually have a belt drive setup and a SS splitter knocking about... but I'm going to try it on a different bike (which sees less crud) first. Stories of issues with mud put me off going for it this time.
Ali C
someone I know has a belt drive nicolai and he absolutely swears it's fantastic in the mud, I've seen first hand his bike jam packed with mud so thick his tyres couldn't move but the drivechain was still fine. I think it would need to be a specific situation to really cause an issue. The only difference I could think is that his is a full-suss and the belt has a tensioner rather than pulled tight as a singlespeed...perhaps this gives some leeway for debris to get under the belt and not cause issues? AdamR28
That's good to know... cheers Ali. Yeah I guess with less tension that gives chance for mud / stones to move out from the belt / sprockets, rather than it constantly being rammed into them! See how it goes... easy enough to adapt... Had another blast last night. Rode some pretty steep / rocky stuff (local name for the line is 'Rampage', ha) which was a good test for the wheels, as well as the usual XC-type blasting, and all still well. Bike has an amazing forgiveness to it, so comfy for a hardtail!

AdamR28
Just a little update... now about 300 miles in and still going strong. I honestly wasn't convinced they'd hold up... the rims weigh 310-320g and are 32mm wide, so the spokes have a lot of work to do - but the wheels have stayed true and round, with no drop in tension. In that 300 miles I've been through two sets of sintered brake pads and worn out set of ti pedal axles, so the bike hasn't had an easy life
manuel
How did you go through two sets of brake pads in 300miles?!
AdamR28
The North's finest slop 300 miles is 35-40,000ft of climbing / descending round here.
forteh
I have a nasty suspicion that I still have the original hope mini pads on the back of my intense from when I bought the caliper back in about 2003 I dare say that it's not had so much hardcore use though
Ali C
Interesting days with Adam today, got to see his bike and wheels in person (so impressed!!). We may have filmed in his workshop, safe for work content coming on Friday

Swoofty
Well I guess it's contagious; I just ordered some BERD spokes. Adam's way is admirably impressive, but no way I'm doing that much work for it! Great vid by the way, Ali.

AdamR28
They're about $8 each in the USA, 8 quid ish over here.
AdamR28
... but the UK distributor won't sell you spokes, you have to get your wheels built by them: https://zedbikewheels.com/product/berd-custom-build-string/ Works out about £11 a spoke with the build charges.
