AdamR28
Ha yep. Insanely fast, in a straight line anyway, something like 30mph average I think? We're nowhere near that at the moment, averaging about 18.5mph over a lap. Hoping better weather conditions might improve that though, it was very windy yesterday! Handling is great though, really neutral and easy to drive, yet still pulled 1.1g on full slicks even in those wet conditions. I think we'll be more suited to the twisty tracks...!
forteh
Think the top lap speeds at curby were around 25ish mph, could be wrong. Our fastest lap speed was 15mph
AdamR28
Someone on the Facebook group said the best way to train for pedal car racing was to ride a recumbent bike... so I built one, using parts from an old slick-shod MTB I used for commuting! Too much of a pussy to cut the steerer tube down yet!

forteh
Adam, entered under the name of the pedaling tarts? Or is that another team of coincidental naming? You going solo or roped in some extras?
AdamR28
Ha, thanks Dave, though you might not say that if you tried to ride it! Yeah we are Pedalling Tarts, have a few others lined up so got a full team for round 2, but perhaps have to do the odd one as a duo or solo.
manuel
Knocked up a little cabinet for Claire’s Lego Harry Potter collection. Bit rough n ready but meh - it’s going in her craft room Adam - the pedal car looks awesome fun - what are the races you are entering?
AdamR28
Doesn't look rough to me! Nice little project that Cheers! So far we're entered for Bruntingthorpe end of this month and one near Sheffield start of May. I really fancy the 24hr but nobody else will commit yet... ha
manuel
Awesome! Is that British pedal car championship? If so I had a read of da rules and doesn’t suggest you can’t put a faring on the wheels or at least turn them into disc wheels? my only other comment would be to borrow some goons TT helmet, as your head is popped up in the airflow. Every little helps.
AdamR28
That's the one! Yeah I looked into the wheel disc thing... apparently you can make a mess of you do it wrong and it doesn't have much effect over a certain speed. We have other more important stuff to improve for now, ha. The helmet thing could be a good one aye, or something behind the drivers head - quite a lot of teams do this... manuel
I’ve seen some good how to threads on TT forums and the likes (there’s even a decent ish gtn video) for diy disc wheels. Only wind tunnel results I’ve seen are from some cover manufacturers (so pinch o salt req) suggest its worth while and results can be similar to proper wheels. Only thing then is you might need skinnier tyres to get the full effect (tyre balling out on top of an aero wheel is bad) I guess at the speeds you are going and the watts you are likely to put out over a long distance means even small gains are going to be significant. ps don’t judge me - I ride a road bike now so my interest in aero bits so I can go either further or faster than my other bike dork work mates is strong. I'm absolutely not judging Especially since I built a rig to test rolling resistance of a few different sets of tyres The ones that came out best by miles (if the numbers are to be believed, around a 30w saving from a set of 4!) are 40mm wide, hence probably not worth us using wheel discs... Figured the most we'll be pumping out over longer runs will be ~180w, which is about 18mph, so not a huge speed - our mechanical losses are about balanced with aero losses at the moment. This is a cool little tool you may or may not have seen: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html This is approximately where we ran the car last time: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html?units=imperial&rp_wr=167.551&rp_wb=70.548&rp_a=7&rp_cd=0.4&rp_dtl=10&ep_crr=0.00972&ep_rho=0.076537&ep_g=0&ep_headwind=0&p2v=200&v2p=22 And now with revised drivetrain setup and new tyres, should be more like this: https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html?units=imperial&rp_wr=167.551&rp_wb=70.548&rp_a=7&rp_cd=0.4&rp_dtl=5&ep_crr=0.006&ep_rho=0.076537&ep_g=0&ep_headwind=0&p2v=200&v2p=22 As you can see, I'm still in the stages of 'optimising' the big lumps of power loss, but yes, I totally agree that small gains will have a huge effect over the lengths of the races. If you fancy a bash Rowan you'd be welcome, btw!
manuel
That is a cool site! Funny I was also going to suggest drivetrain as easy gains . I’d love to have a bash - looks hilarious, the whole concept of the sport looks right up my street. Maybe when I’ve finished building my man cave I’ll build one too (I’ve always wanted to learn to weld).
AdamR28
Yeah that twin chain setup wasn't ideal... We have space in the team for round 1, near Leicester, 29th March. You know how to get in touch if you wanna help us do some pedalling And what better way to start figuring out how to build one...

My guess is this didn’t happen (I only just saw this post somehow)? If there are any social gatherings allowed this year and some races happen I’d be up for pedalling if you have space and I can make it! I am old and unfit now though
AdamR28
Yeah, first two rounds cancelled at the moment... Sounds good, no bother about being unfit, it's just a laugh
forteh
This is only a partial makers thread post Following on from me setting up my sim racing wheel and pedals with the cobbled together clutch and handbrake I've been spending quite a lot of time driving a mk2 escort in dirt rally 2.0 and can't help but feel that I'm not getting the true visceral experience of it with a flappy paddle gear change. The thrustmaster th8a H-pattern shifter is about 150quid but it's a no go because it's really noisy and risks waking children. So I've fired up solidworks and I'm making myself a 7 speed + reverse H-pattern shifter A friend is 3D printing the triangular shaped pivot in the middle, the rest I'll make from aluminium and steel. forteh
Fore and aft selector pivot printed, bearings fitted. Got all the microswitches and usb encoder board. I've changed the design to include a slot on module that converts it to a sequential shifter. The pivot bearing centering mechanism isn't going to be stiff enough for the sequential so designing in some adjustable leaf springs so I should be able to fine tune it. All good fun but making me hanker after a 3D printer
dann2707
Really cool man. Definitely buy a 3d printer, I use mine allllll the time Infact I can hear it whirring away in the spare room as I type haha
Tom Booth
A few have probably seen it on instagram, but this is the latest project for me.. Converting A 1950s Coke chest cooler into a loveseat. These were originally filled with refrigeration gear in the lower half and a stainless tub in the top half to keep water cool in the stainless tub and keep your drinks cold, quickly superseded by Coke for refrigerater air units and self vending machines. Some of these were taken back by Coca Cola and converted into seats for promotion and to give out to bigger retailers. Pretty excited to get further with this one and get it off to uoholstry/blasting.

aener
Obviously I have no idea of the market or demographic of people that would want that, but are you not tempted to lacquer/epoxy over it as-is for that aces rat-look?
