Cracks

Evening all,

I really cracked on with the riding today *ahem* please excuse the pun. My Echo Lite frame cracked at the bash plate mount almost all the way around the down tube so there is only 1/6 of the tube or so holding on. What do you advice - wield it, or get a new frame?

Cheers,

Ivan

You could get it welded, but because it won't be heat it will be weaker; so could last a ride or a year.... If you have the money and fancy a change i'd buy a new frame, if you're tight for cash and can get it done cheap you might get away with rewelding it. But by the sounds of it the frame is fairly well gone.

If the crack is as big as you say it is, new frame. A small crack you can weld over, sure, but a crack that large has definitely caused major structural damage.

Also remember where the crack is: If it's at the bottom of the downtube near the bb, consider how much stress/strain is put on that one section of the frame (bearing in mind you said it's made it's way round the tube too), and do you really want to trust a weld to hold not only a rider's weight but also however much you're stressing it when riding? Depends how skilled your welder is I guess. Good luck dude

Thanks for the replies!

I've heard very good things about this welder guy, from what I know the frames and forks that he welded never cracked at the same place, but I guess I'll go for a new frame, just to be sure. I don't want to be scraping my balls off the stem if the down tube snaps :P

Hi dude,
I had old echo lite forks from the good ones back in the days.. The steerer was half way snapped, so I got a custom extension made which was fitted quite tight in the original tube, then tightened even more with a headlock and welded just to make sure it stays there. After 10 min riding the steerer snapped and I smashed my elbow on the ground. Similar situation with my handlebar extensions...
I also had a half stripped thread on an echo forged crank, so again I used a custom made insert to hold my pedal better (similar to the onza muscleman cranks) and I'm sure you can guess what happened wasn't very nice.

I've also made 4 bolt to V adapters, brake boosters, top caps and small bits like this..

I can give many examples but from experience I would suggest: If you like home made stuff like me, go ahead, I totally support thinking people who can use tools and machinery to make their own parts BUT make sure you start and make something from scratch rather than trying to fix a stock part which is already broken, most likely it will be painful ;)

I wish I could make something decent with my hands! My abilities, as far as bike parts are concerned, end at grinding rims and trimming down handlebars :( I bet if I try to weld something it will end up in self-incineration, or worse. I think I'll stick with properly made parts, just to be sure I don't spend more time in hospitals than I absolutely have to!
