Bottleneck
For those who ride mods, can someone explain the differences between a bunnyhop to rear and a pedal up to rear? Not in terms of what they are but, say, why a lot of the top riders like Benito Ros choose bunnyhops over pedal ups, why they seem to allow higher jumps, etc? I couldn't find anything on the subject on this forum, but I can't be the only one wondering, right? Or are mod riders going extinct?
Herbertlemon102
I much prefer bunny hops. I find it converts speed/momentum into height a lot better. I'm not amazingly strong, so I can't beast out high pedal-ups.your feet don't have to move either so I find it easier to tuck, speaking as a street rider, I can go into manuals from bunny hops better too here's a bunny hop to manual brakeless picture that I'm fond of and will post everywhere.

Thanks mate, this makes sense to me. I found that after only two days of practicing bunnyhops I can jump almost as high as I did after doing pedal ups for two years, this must mean something! Also, nice photo! Is that the same front tyre + fork as Flipp runs? Why the booster fork if you don't have maggie? Bottleneck
Right! Should have figured it out...

After using them briefly when I first got them I can understand why no one bought them for bmx's, they're ridiculously grippy. Great for trials! I killed my rear 20" before that photo was taken but I just built up a new set the other day. And, as cap said, foot jams
Bottleneck
Maybe you guys could give me some advice on how to get higher? Is it the usual stuff, preloading and tucking? Or are there any more little secrets? (I can't upload the videos as they seem to be too big ) I can do a little over one meter either way (bunny hop or pedal up) after a good warm up, but of course it's not the upper limit
niconj
But already a lot higher than I can go.
Mark W
On my mod I learned to get up stuff by pedal upping stuff, and after about 4-5 years of that learned to bunnyhop. On the same day I could go as big as I could pedal upping, then learned to go higher. On mods it's a technique that works super well (and on 24" streetier style bikes too), especially when you get into hooks as well. As with most stuff it's a case of just exaggerating the motions to get more height. Really compress down for the preload, then really rip the bars up. They kind of felt a bit two stage to me on my mod (compared to on BMX at least), so you really have to focus on getting the front end up, and moving upwards too. Once that's well on the way you can just start sucking the back end of the bike up, and bringing the back wheel up and underneath you. Bottleneck
Ok here's a clip from yesterday, my third day of bunny hopping. I'm not hopeless I guess? IMG_0279.MOV

The compression is important, the upwards pull is definitely important but the biggest thing is tucking the pure shite out of it. I get multiple black marks on my arse from the tyre hitting it if you've got normal bar angle, it's quite two- staged as @Mark W said, mine are a little bit further back than that so not so much. Mark W
1 hour ago, ItsMatt said: that filter is horrendous, what have you done? #hdr @Bottleneck - technique looks pretty reasonable, but your bars look kind of far forward. That's where the trade-off comes in with bar angle - it'll make it better on back wheel, but it kills being able to lift the front for pedal ups and bunnyhops. Not such an issue with 26" bikes where you can put them on upside down because you're just slow-mo tapping up stuff anyway, but on mods it's a bit more of a problem in that sense. You can see how the bar angle is affecting your arm angle, and how that in turn will then affect being able to pull up for the bunnyhop. Bottleneck
On my stock and the 24" I found that the bars tilted way forward don't give me any problems with pedal ups at all, I have about the same height as on the mod but the bars are something like what Hermance has. On the mod I put the bars back up compared to what I used to have some time before. Bunny hops are obviously much easier this way, but my up to fronts now suffer a little. Maybe I'm just shite at them?
