Luke Rainbird
If you have short legs, shorter cranks can help stop you feeling like you're spinning wildly. If you can't quite get a nice-feeling leverage ratio once running a gear ratio you like, then tweaking crank lengths can help. If you often find you don't have the ground clearance you need, shorter cranks will help slightly. There's not really a huge difference in terms of it actually making certain techniques easier (in fact, the extra leverage of longer cranks will give you more "power" at the cost of moving your feet negligibly quicker). cleep2
I know that jack Carthy and other leading riders use 165mm cranks, apparently it makes the pedals stroke faster therefore more responsive and better on technical
JKH
The biggest difference with 165mm cranks is that your cranks/pedal/foot will not hit on things like the ground (for comp bikes), and your your foot will not rub the front tire (for street bikes). Sure, in theory longer cranks have less leverage, but I don't think many top riders are lacking in the leg strength department.
