joaovidal12
I need to grind my rim and I had a 5min experience using an angle grinder to cut a metal sheet once. I will take the wheel and the tire, because noobiness. I have read and watched tutorials, like the TNN,Tarty and some others. Can you give me some tips for the procedure? Metal grinding or cutting disk? How to make sure I dont cut the rim?
Daviesdt
I did this about a month ago after just watching the tarty bike tutorial, never done it before either so was worried about wrecking my wheel. Turns out was pretty easy and got some solid grip on back wheel. I used a dtone grinder disk and did it at an angle of 22 degrees (half of 45). Just go lightly, you can always go back over it and grind more if its too light, cant do that if you tearvthrough your rim! If you want practice why dont you just get a bit of scrap metal and try a grind on that? Oh, defo take wheel off bike and tyre off rim, one less thing to worry about. ooo
yeah its easy don't worry about it, if the disk is at an angle and you just drag lightly it won't cut through. How harsh your grind is sort of depends on technique like how fast you move the grind disk but also the thickness of the disk. Generall a thicker (grinding) disk will give a deeper harsher grind where as a thin cutting disk will leave a shallower grind, thin cutting discs remove less material from the rim. Different pads / rim combinations and weather conditions need different types of grind but just experiment, and follow the TNN and tarty guides, don't run back and forth it just removes more material. Usually tarty says on their site what sort of grind you want. Also wear protective gear if you are going to be sketchy.
joaovidal12
My first grind: Some zones are fine, others not so great. So from my experience: Dont skip the numer 1 rule - use a brand new disk. Mine was a bit used, And since i was afraid of damaging the rim I used shallow angle resulting in shallow grind, in the beginning almost polishing the rim. Seems harder to revive an old grind than doing it on a fresh rim. Edited February 5, 2016 by joaovidal12
