isitafox
If you do it right you can run without one anyway, just need a tensioner whilst it beds in...

jeff costello
i tried but couldn't get anything to work without having to do some filing. (didn't think about running the tensioner for a while until the chain lengthens). now it's too late. happy with the mod.
Mark W
It seems pretty mind blowing you'd buy a new bike rather than slightly adjust/tweak/set up your existing one - especially changing to a completely different wheel size... Skoze
Clearly you've never gone through the sheer abject f**king horror of having to run a chain tensioner, Mark.

Dman
What's so bad that I don't get? I know bending or breaking a hanger is a nightmare on a ride but if you have a spare no problem. Setup right there's no difference with or without.
Mark W
They can make your drivetrain feel a little less direct in a way - it is kind of dependent on the exact setup though. With some frames/ratios the tensioner is only really having to apply a little bit of additional tension to keep things nice and tight, but on others you can find you're having to take up a fair bit more slack and that's when they start feeling less than ideal, you get more rattling, etc.

Mark W
I sidehop to the right too - I landed on that tensioner arm a good few times with no issues. If you've got about the right CS length for your setup you can get away with running the tensioner tucked up against the stay itself, so it supports it a lot better and usually avoids destroying everything.
jeff costello
i was exaggerating a little bit. the 4play was my first trials bike. i was ogling the mods from the beginning, but i wanted something with a seat. but when i found out that i was much more into static stuff than street, i wanted to change. also i had a christmas bonus on hand that had to somewhere. still i found the chain tensioners the most unnecessarily annoying things ever. i did all that- tensioner arm againt the chain stay, ... still i kept messing it up or the hanger. i bought a new mech hanger (appr €20 inc. postage) and within a week it was already bent again. constantly bent hangers were affecting chain line, huge pita when changing tubes . as a beginner every attempt at sidehops i was afraid of ruining the thing again. Plus you're gaining a shorter chainstay length so its win win. Edited January 22, 2016 by Paperclip
Ross McArthur
I've managed to happen upon a tensioner which screws in, inboard of the hanger. I'll post a pic.

JD™
I had my brakeless build out of the shed over the weekend and it looks craaaaaazy long. Strange how perceptions change!
Mark W
Yeah, I think my Arcade's about 30mm shorter? The reach of the frame is actually 5-10mm longer though from memory.
TrialsIsHard
I was thinking the exact same looking at the Inspired I'm building. I thought the frame was bent because the forks are so slack!
