Tom Booth
Before I launch into this and thoroughly make a mess I just thought I'd ask, it makes sence in my head but not sure if it's possible. I bought a Linx Windows tablet to use for my business, I need to install a program onto there for paint mixing. The program is on disc and obviously the tablet doesn't have a CD drive. If I connect my the tablet to a laptop via usb, and install the program to the relevant location (F: or E: or whatever it is) will the program run or will I fail? I did consider copy and pasting the files from the laptops program file onto a memory stick then copy and paste onto the tablet, but pretty certain that doesn't work? Mikee
I think I am right in saying that the lower end windows tablets don't run full windows and can only run apps from the app store. And to run full desktop programs, you need the more powerful models, like the surface pro.
Tom Booth
Luckily I enquired about this first, the linx 10 should be running a full version of Windows 8 and able to support full programs (if you can get the bloody things on there). MadManMike
Can you not borrow / buy an external CD drive and hook it up via USB? I think they're pretty cheap these days...
JD™
You'll probably need a powered USB hub as well if you go down the CD drive route. What's the program you need to install?
Tom Booth
I've done my googling and discovered if I copy and paste from the CD staright onto a ish drive it'll carry all installation files. I did that, just inserted the usb drive into the tablet and it began installing, then reached a point saying 'SSQ reader unavailable, update via the internet'. So I did just that and its a winner! Fired up straight away!
monkeyseemonkeydo
Good work! Impressed that worked but obviously worth doing your homework first and speccing the right tablet. As it's full Windows is it upgradable to W10?
Tom Booth
It is upgradable but the software I need doesn't agree with W10 for whatever reason. JD, the program was a paint mixing scheme, just a massive database of colours then the relevant weights and information needed to mix them. I don't have the space/need for a full laptop so a wall mounted 10" tablet does everything I need. Plus having the SD slot makes keeping reference pictures and progress pictures nice and easy to keep up to date.
JD™
Glad you got it fixed. I was asking in case there was a way of downloading it straight to the tablet rather than faffing with the CD/USB etc. Good job you didn't need that! Danny
I know its sorting now but im guessing its not the kind of software you can just go download from the developers website in future?
Tom Booth
I did look into it but there not the most advanced company online, they're pretty shitty and German
JT!
There's probably a program out there that'll take everything from a CD and make it into a installation file. But glad you got it sorted either way.
Danny
If in doubt you can always rip a cd into an ISO file and use one of those virtual cd drive software jobbo's.
