87Monty
Example a 19" rear wheel, Where is this 116mm comming from? Or 105mm, Is it between the frame, end to end on the hub?? Where? Pic of explanation please? I have a monty kamel 220 frame, but i cant find out if the orginale hub is 105mm or 116mm, im looking for a new rear wheel/rim and dont know what i should choose cause of the hub, i will use snailcams on the outside on the frame btw.. Maybe i need to take of the rearwheel first and find what dropout spacing its between the frame... Thanks. Mark W
The spacing refers to the spacing from the inside face of one dropout on your frame to the other. When you're measuring a hub, it's from the outside of your hub spacer on one side to the outside of the hub spacer on the other (or from outside of locknut to outside of locknut if you've got an open bearing wheel). Generally speaking, most 20" frames are 116mm spaced. You'd then use a 110mm spaced hub, which would be spaced out by using a pair of snail cams (which are 3mm each), bringing you a total of 116mm of overall spacing for your hub/chain tensioners. If you've got a 220 Kamel, I believe it'll have 106mm spaced dropouts, and you'll usually have to use snail cams on the outside of the frame. 87Monty
Thanks! so i still can use 116mm hub or (105mm hub with outside snailcams) ? I took a measurment now and it shows 106mm from end to end of hub spacer. Looks like its best to use a 105mm hub then maybe.
Mark W
105mm or 106mm would be the ones to go for. You can kiiiind of make some 110mm spaced hubs work, but it gets pretty tech with having to adjust/use different spacers so they fit in the dropouts. There used to be a wider range (Onza, Viz, Monty and a few others did hubs that'd work), but because everyone's gravitated fully towards 116mm frames these days they're dying out a bit. 87Monty
Ah i see, thanks, so monty have smaller dropout frames than todays trialbikes frames have if i understand right.
Mark W
Yep, spot on. They even went 1mm in the 'wrong' direction with the M5, dropping it to 105mm instead of their usual 106mm.
87Monty
Aha ok, i have order a rearwheel with 105mm hub, if i choose to buy another 20" bike brand in the future with 116mm frame, i still can use 105mm hub on that frame include spacers if i want to swap over the rearwheel instead of replace the hub with a 116mm? Mark W
Yeah, as long as there's enough axle overlap in the dropouts you shoooould be able to.
