Jack_Mullaly
I recently had the chance to sit down with a sports psychologist, Daniel Dymond and discuss the application of sports psychology to trials. We touch on a whole range of topics including techniques to become comfortable with scary situations and improve riding performance. If you're interested you can check it our here http://jackmullaly.com/2015/08/13/jack-mullaly-discussions-episode-7-the-psychology-of-biketrials/I'm keen to know what you think of the topics Daniel and I discussed.CheersJack Edited August 13, 2015 by Jack_Mullaly
valk
Do something about the birds. Never tried "accepting" the challenge instead of positive thinking which is what I normally do. Will try to see if I improve, also the brain predicting means that it will come down to time behind the bars. cwtrials
So I actually found that incredibly insightful and am really looking forward to trying to apply some of my takeaway in my riding. Planning on watching it again in a few weeks and revisiting. Definitely seemed to really identify exactly what is going through my head in situations that paralyze me as a rider, but in the past I wasn't sure how to change my mindset to overcome those emotions except even more positive thinking. Which of course never really worked. Thanks Jack! Edited August 14, 2015 by cwtrials
Jack_Mullaly
Thanks for watching guys. I'm glad that you related to what Dan was talking about and got something from it. Let me know how it goes when you try and apply it to your riding. I'll take onboard your comment about the birds and record future intros in a quieter place (well not the next one, I've already done it... but all the ones after that). Dave Anscombe
I know im not well received here but i know i can add to this What you put in you get out....Sounds simple but many people struggle with this. Il state the obvious ones Food-eat healthy drink nothing but water -If you can afford a reverse osmosis filter Even better Thoughts..cultivate good thoughts about everything really and know that there are always positives to be found in the neggies The not so obvious ones How you feel greatly improves everything you do. Mindfulness meditation -Nothing worse than pointless mind chatter. Visualize Get a slackline .......Once you can walk -start doing jumping on the line -this improves your -explosive power-core strength -focus -list goes on and on slackline is an amazing cross trainer This not only applies to trials it will bleed over in to the everyday things you do. Ohhhh and one more key thing -Masturbation -do less of that -And you will find you have much much greater energy to produce positive thoughts and emotions Ohhhh and the control thing -Ultimately You only have control over your thoughts and emotions ---And not many people have those under control I wonder why Because people are running on auto pilot or what i call everyday consciousness -Go beyond that and you will find a vast amount of clarity peace and calm Think like bruce lee -There is no try only do (he masterd his subconscious mind) Edited August 14, 2015 by Dave Anscombe
Jack_Mullaly
Interesting thoughts Dave. I'm keen to chat more with you about a bunch of what you said. I'm not sure if trials forum has a chat feature (I couldn't find it). If not, can you shoot me an email via the details on this page http://jackmullaly.com/contact/

Jack_Mullaly
Thanks for watching the episode and for the feedback everyone.Given that a few people found the episode interesting so I decided to do a follow up (no interview this time, just me) and expand on a particular experience that I had recently while riding trials that fits into the sport psychology theme. Have you ever had that thing happen where you can do a move, then you make it bigger, higher, scarier and suddenly you forget how to do it? This episode is about that, and a little mental hack that I have been trying to overcome it. For anyone who's wondering, I took the feedback about the squawking birds serious and recorded this in a much quieter space using a better microphone. It should be easier to listen to. Let me know what you think. A usual, feedback is welcome! The episode of available here via youtube, iTunes and download.
valk
That exactly happened to me, when I started giving it a go at a sidehop of 9 pallets, I went from 7 pallets to 8.7 in about 2 weeks time; so I tried 9, did it twice within like 20 attempts and then I forgot how to sidehop entirely and went back down to 7 pallets for the rest of about a year up until now. And I've been pissed till now of how can I forget to do something that I seemed to have gotten in such a natural way before. I'll try this hack and report the findings in trials and something else as well.
