Steerer extenion/ bodge

Ive just built myself a street bike amd used some old trial tech forks which turns out are way too short on this frame and only have about 4mm poking out the top. At the moment im using an off cut from another steerer on top then a massive bolt to go though that cut off then into the origonal forks which is probally a really bad idea, it is only to tie me over though. Ia there anything i can do to stop it wobbling and make it stronger?

Or is there anyone within an hour or so of norfolk/norwich that has some 26/24 disc forks for sale?

Do you mean out the top of the headset itself? If so, that does seem to be a pretty sketchy way to do things. I ran an extender for quite a long time before, but it realistically only added about 5mm or so, meaning that the extender only 'joined' the steerer pretty much level with where the top steerer bolt was/would have been. There's still a lot of stem supporting it there so I wasn't too fussed, but yeah, if you're only using 4mm outside of the headset then that's quite a bit more dicey sounding.

I did one on my old trialtechs, put a star nut in the existing steerer, drill it out to 6/7mm.

Weld the extension on from the outside, grind backto flush, but make sure you do a mini route weld.

Bang a starnut in the newly added extension, put a big bolt through from the bottom going through the first starnut (not threading) then passing into the last one (threading)

You should be left with some exposed bolt hanging out the top, bang a topcap on, put a nut on to tighten the headset with a springwasher, grind the bolt back flush to the top of the nut.

You have the both the bolt and the route weld holding her inplace

Worked for me (Y)
