Mikee
I have a hex frame lying around doing nothing as I got bored of breaking mech hangers. I keep seeing a load of hexs with a tensioner-less setup and I want this so that I can ride my hex without the stress of breaking a hanger mid ride. I have tried lots of different ratios with sprockets I have spare but have had no luck. Apparently 18:15 with a half link works (but I want to avoid half links) and also that 17:14 works with a bit of filing. But it would be nice to hear from someone who has done it before a shell out money on bits. Has anyone on here done it with a trialsy gear ratio. I don't mind a bit of filing if necessary. isitafox
22-16 is gonna be the closest you'll get and it may need 1-2mm of filing for that

I have been doing a bit of reading on observedtrials and 17:14 seems to be very promising.
manuel
Or just get something that doesn't use the mech hanger and pushes up?
Mikee
Or just get something that doesn't use the mech hanger and pushes up? I have tried similar with a 74kingz tensioner pushing down, but everything I have tried so far with the sprockets I have seem to be either about a half link short or way too long. Plus I love the clean look of no chain tensioners. I hope one day that inspired bring in a horizontal drop out option. Mikee
they do on the arcade and console Yeah, I just hope it filters across to the fourplay and hex models. 20-15 worked for me. Cheers for the info. Was it still light enough for the "proper" trials stuff.
dngr2self
It was a good middle ground.
Paperclip
18:15 filing the dropouts, using the mech hanger mounting bolt hole fit a nut/bolt setup. Run a drive side snail cam and you're sorted. You also lose 5mm of rear end so all round win!
uk24
I Hate the tensioners on all bikes. my fourplay runs 22-16 and I get away with it.

Mikee
My hex is 22-18 with a kingz in up mode. Would it be a pain to ask for a picture so that I can see what that setup looks like?
manuel
There was one on here somewhere but I can't find it. Bike is in the shed, I'll try over the weekend.
Mikee
My hex is 22-18 with a kingz in up mode. I realised that I could try this myself and it was way off. A link less and the chain is too short, put the link back in and it is way too slack for a kingz tensioner. Did they change the chainstay lengths on the hex? Mine seems to be 385mm if they did. Also came across this. http://www.machinehead-software.co.uk/bike/chain_length/chainlengthcalc.html Edited April 24, 2015 by Mikee

Mikee
I already have that one saved, but thanks anyway It backs up the 20-15 suggested earlier. The calculator I linked also seems reliable. So I think we should all bookmark it! Edited April 24, 2015 by Mikee
HarryBradbury
At the moment I use an element without a tensioner, 24-12 gear ratio and just use the vertical dropouts as you would use a horizontal one. If the chain needs to be tighter, I lift the wheel up a fraction and tighten the bolts, simples.
Mikee
For anyone who is interested... This is 17-14 with an old/stretched chain. Tiny bit of filing, some sort of spacers to push the wheel back and it's mission accomplished.
