MadManMike
Find me a round or square washer that is M6 and has an OD of at least 60mm, that doesn't cost as much as my house. I can't seem to find any that aren't insanely expensive.
AdamR28
Never heard of one... What's it for? Holesaw and a sheet of steel? Laser cut item?
MadManMike
DIY Headset press using M6 threaded rod, I was hoping to stack 4 or 5 washers either end to fit a headset. I could use the block of wood and a mallet approach, but that always seems barbaric on new components.
AdamR28
Not sure if M6 rod will be up to the job... I'd go to at least M8 if you can, then a regular penny washer would work (unless its a 1.5 headset?).
MadManMike
It's 1 1/8", but the bottom looks like it would need more than 50mm diameter to fit over the headset. I could be wrong and probably am... I'll go for M10, just to make sure it's man enough for the job.
JDâ„¢
I have this one, because I couldn't be bothered to get all the bits. Worked perfectly the two times I've needed it, although obviously not workshop quality! Uses 50mm, so seems like if you're going to make it yourself that should do it. MadManMike
Perfect! That's what I was trying to achieve, which I have done, but for more than that costs... Cheers mate.

dngr2self
I'd just any old bit of steel that was big enough and drill a hole in it.

Did that weird astroturf stuff on the faces of the plates wear off as quickly as I imagine it would?
LukasMcNeal
Mike I got the whole shabang you can have for postage? How soon do you need it? I fitted one headset with it and now I don't even have a bike so no use to me.
JDâ„¢
Did that weird astroturf stuff on the faces of the plates wear off as quickly as I imagine it would? It hasn't on mine, but I've only used it twice so it hasn't had much chance. I'll be stripping both bikes and making them all nice and tight this weekend because they've been neglected, so maybe it'll rip off then nothing a bit of non slip material wouldn't sort. King C
I had some shallow cones turned in aluminium if you still need them?

PM me your cost mate and I'll PayPal you! I had some shallow cones turned in aluminium if you still need them? Cheers, looks like the one above will solve the problem, but if not I'll take you up on that offer

Jolfa
I would have just gone with a stack of progressively bigger washers, from the nuts and bolts container any man should have Doesn't matter what size the hole is then as long as they cant fit through each other..!

That's what I did on my diy headset press, it works like a charm and I didn't spend a penny... ;p
MadManMike
Well I only spent £2, so I'm hardly bankrupt
forteh
I borrowed a length of m16 all thread, some nuts and washers from the stores at work When I say borrowed, I mean stole
bing
My press consists of 2 pieces of 50x50x10mm flat plate, with a 12mm hole drilled in the middle, and a piece of m12 threaded bar with a nut welded to one end. Made by a fitter from work. Works a treat
Luke Rainbird
Mine consists of some ~93x87mm arbitrary wooden offcut and a lumphammer. Edit: Except when I had that WIP frame, then I just pushed the cups in by hand...
weirdoku
I bought that exact same home made press JD linked form eBay. I found that the washers bend inwards as the nut is smaller than the washer. It did the job though, but probably won't last for more than 5 uses.
