MadManMike
I'm looking for a new helmet, as I don't currently have one and I now ride trails and would like to have my head if I end up ploughing into rocks or a tree. Ideally not crazy money, but something mid-range would be good. Any ideas?
Tom Booth
IXS Trail RS mike, since I've had mine I wouldn't trust anything else!
MadManMike
Awesome I'll check it out, cheers Tom. Also, this was meant to be in the other bike chat bit, not chit chat... oops!
Tom Booth
If you skulk around you can get it for around £50ish if your not too fussed on colour.
MadManMike
Yeah I'm not too fussed, as long as it's not neon yellow or pink or something extreme. That's the sort of budget I'd set, so it looks like a winner.
Kevinfor
Im using the 661 Dirt lid and it does a great job of making my head hot while I spend my time not falling on my head

Pashley26
I'm a huge fan of the Specialized Vice helmet. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/vice-helmet-ec069881 You don't HAVE to get it in a lairy colour, but why not? From back in the day when I was top notch bike salesman I never found anything which offered the protection and the fit to such a wide range of customers as the Vice helmet. I used a Vice for a year or two, until I took a particularly large hit with it and upgraded to the carbon s-works MT helmet. Which even today is still far better than almost any XC helmet. Luke Rainbird
To go a tad off-topic; Jardo - is there much trail riding in Hampshire at the mo? I'm assuming there MUST be something around worth a regular ride? Keen to bring the MTB up with me so if you do ever decide to get one again...
Pashley26
There REALLY is, I know of loads of trails, clubs and groups of friends that are always out and about. But not having a bike myself at the moment I've not really been looking at it too keenly, been spending too much time on four wheels. When you get yourself up here we'll hit the trails
Luke Rainbird
See you in a few weeks. Cars bikes and beer please
Tony Harrison
Luke there's Swinley Forest in Surrey if you're ever out that way. I'm looking at buying a Bell Super 2. Bit pricey but very comfortable when I tried one on.

Tony Harrison
I think claiming that it's the 'only helmet worth looking at' is stretching it a bit though...

bing
Fox flux. Saved my canister a few times
N.Wood
All depends on fit, buy whatever is most comfortable. I have a Giro Xen, Giro Xar and a Specialized S Works, not really got a preference. Specialized fits well and is light, Xen has good coverage, Xar looks the best and has good coverage.
Mark W
As always, trying shit on is the way to go I've worn Xens before and they fitted me really well, but when I tried a Fox Flux it felt like it was designed for people with some kind of freakish oblong shaped skull. TSG helmets feel like they're made for people who could fit their head through a letterbox and Bell helmets appear to just perch on top of your skull. It'd probably be worth popping into a couple of bike shops and seeing how different manufacturers products feel to you, then work out the right price-point for you afterwards
MadManMike
Sounds advice, cheers all. There's a few bike shops in Briz so I'll have a wander and try some on. I've made a note of all the suggestions, just gotta see which ones fit the best
