Miles Mallinson
Right, I've never broken my ankles. I've had a few minor sprains but thats it. But most of the time if I bail or take a dodgy landing and my ankles dip a bit I get huge shooting pains through the top and front of my feet and this holds me back from trying any thing silly. I've tried an 661 ankle brace and that seems to work decently but I have to do it up proper tight and it's pretty uncomfortable. Anyone got any ideas on how to either remedy this or any ankle braces that will help? Cheers Edited November 24, 2014 by Miles Mallinson
ogre
go see a doctor or physio. do something to strengthen your feet/ankles like running... what did you do before trials?
SamKidney
As above, see a doctor or physio. I had a similar experience to the point where I couldn't walk properly when it flared up, diagnosed as Achilles Tendonitis.
isitafox
As above, I broke my ankle a few years ago (front wheel washed out on me and I just fell sideways with my foot on the pedal) and struggled with for a while once it had healed. If you're gettin shooting pains maybe you have some small scale ligament damage causing this? A physio should be able to recommend some exercises to strengthen your ankles and recommend a decent brace.
JamieWilliams
I broke my left ankle 6 weeks and had operation on it 2 weeks ago I'm looking at one of these for when I'm back riding http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=190503169065 I still need to lean to walk again first
isitafox
That's the one I've got, feels weird at first riding with it but saved me more than once!
ben_travis
I have had major ankle problems for years and only just got to the point when i can ride without one. I used the aircast for a year or two and HIGHLY recommend it. Its pretty bulky compared to many, but is so stiff that you'll not be rolling your ankle anytime soon. I didn't pay £45 for mine though. although looking where i got mine from and its up to £45. Looks like Andy Murrays use of them has put the price up.
craigjames
Definitely get it looked at by a physio, currently in a cast after having a full rupture and avulsion fracture of my ATFL. Originally wrecked it 8 years ago and it got to the point I badly sprained it 3 times in the last year. Moral of the story, get assessed and sorted before you really do some damage. isitafox
Make sure though that once you recover you stop wearing it or your ankle will start to rely on it. I broke my ankle in the March, I think I started back on a bike (road at first) in June/July, back on the trials bike very gently end of Aug/Sept then I stopped using the support in the new year. Jake.
I use the aircast one now too... Been a year since I hurt my ankle and it hurts when I don't use the brace...
craigjames
I use the aircast one now too... Been a year since I hurt my ankle and it hurts when I don't use the brace... Did you have any physio work or do any exercises to strengthen it back up at all? Or did you just put the brace on once it felt OK and carried on using the brace? If you did that'll be why, you never strengthened the joint back up and now you've got a weak ankle and are reliant on the brace.
Jake.
I know.
bing
Mine was gammy as f**k when I smashed my heel to bits. I was a least a year before I could get anywhere near riding like I used to. It's been 20 months now, I still get the odd twinge but due to the tissue damage I can't kick a football or run fast anywhere now. And when it's cold and damp it feels like somebody is sticking a knife in it Edited November 25, 2014 by bing
monkeyseemonkeydo
My ankles click like buggery. Never broken either or had any pain but just walking they click all the time. Can't be good but got to be trials related...
N.Wood
Both of mine are f**ked, partially tore / sprained / whatever both of the ligaments in the past. Left due to snowboarding on a skateboard deck (10 years ago), right rolling it in a comp (6 years ago). Both mostly healed but still hurt about once a month when I manage to jar them in the wrong way, but not enough for me to do anything about it. My knees arn't great either so I've decided to just buy a wheelchair when I can no longer walk.

Have you ever tried doing anything for it? Yeah, same here- doesn't cause any issues just mildly embarrassing occasionally and kinda weird! Never done anything about it or seen anyone. bing
I had loads of physio on mine and did quite a bit of stretching and bending to get movement back with the minimum amount of pain. Luckily I don't need surgery
Otacon
My ankles went though hell and back in the 10 years i rode trials, I broke each one 3 times. I have 2 plates and 6 pins in the left and 3 plates and 8 pins in the right. After the last time, I was told there's a chance I may never walk again if i break one of my feet again, so I stopped riding for a good while and underwent some serious physio for both ankles and did alot of strength training, after that i wore ankle braces on both ankles for 12 months or so when i got back on a bike and I never really had much trouble. I've been off a bike for 3 years now, getting back on one again next year, I imagine they should be fine still. I do alot of running and training day to day anyways. Also, out of curiosity, Hows your weight and build? Being overweight plays hell on the joints, especially after any damage and also at an older age. So if your carrying a little more weight than you should be, hit the gym or some high intensity circuit training and improve your fitness and weight. I also found drinking alot of milk to increase bone strength and also eating high protein foods to strengthen muscles. This is as much a sport as any and Physique and diet are just as important than that of a Boxer or Football player. If you really want some professional help, there's a guy on here (If he still uses the forum) called Si the Physio, He's dealt with myself and alot of big name riders in the past to help them through injuries etc.
bing
I'm fairly heavy and pretty solidly built, but I'm fairly gentle on parts. Since The injury I've become a lot smoother rider
