jnthebiker
Hey all. My front hope mono trial that I just bought used is leaking from one of the screws on the diaphragm cap, after I just bled it. The diaphragm looks okay, I'm wondering did I maybe roll it in the wrong way or something? Thanks, J
AdamR28
It'll either be... - Bolts are too tight (undo then and just nip them up VERY gently, it doesn't have to seal under pressure, only gravity) - Excess fluid, wipe off and away you go
jnthebiker
Thanks! It's not excess fluid, as when I pull the lever, bubbles come out.I'll try the bolts and get back to you.

It's about 80% better, but still a few bubbles. How gently is VERY gently?
jnthebiker
It's leaking more again. What should I do?
jnthebiker
Never mind. Its all sorted. Thanks all!
isitafox
What did you do to fix it?
jnthebiker
Diaphragm was a little crooked and the bolts were too tight. Now its mint!
jnthebiker
Turns out it's not mint at all... It's leaked ever since a week after that. When I fix one problem, another arises. I'm pretty much ready to be done with this brake, unless it can really be fixed in a way that it will STAY! Does anyone have any ideas for how to deal with it? isitafox
New lever?
jnthebiker
I think the caliper has problems too, not sure.
AdamR28
Hope this doesn't come out the wrong way, bui I'd send it to someone who is familiar with these brakes and get them to do a full inspection and service. I've seen 20 year old Hope brakes working perfectly, they just need the right maintenance.
jnthebiker
It doesn't come out the wrong way at all. Where would you recommend for me? I'm in upstate New York in the United States. Even finding a bike shop is over an hour drive, and there's NO WAY that they service hopes. Do you guys do it there at Tarty? If so, what would the cost be including shipping?

Tarty do this but couldn't you try to buy a new diaphragm first?
jnthebiker
Tarty do this but couldn't you try to buy a new diaphragm first? Yes I could, but I'm pretty much done with this brake mentally, I have probably put close to 30 hours into this thing and it hasn't gotten any better. I would like to send it out and have it dealt with, or get rid of it. What's the fee for tarty doing a full overhall? I looked on their site and couldn't find it, maybe I looked in the wrong place? AdamR28
We charge £20.83 per hour (weird price cos it's £25 with VAT) for labour, and do things on a job-by-job basis. We prefer not to do a 'full overhaul' on something if it doesn't need it, but happy to do so if you wish. We prefer to start with a free of charge inspection and quote for the job from there. Is there a leak anywhere? If so, where from exactly and when does it leak exactly?
jnthebiker
Ok. I would let you guys judge what it needs if i were to send it. My goal is to have a very good brake, that doesn't feel like a sponge with a lever. It leaks a lot from the diaphragm as in the first picture I posted in this thread. Also, I think it may leak in the master cylinder piston area, as it makes squelching noises when the lever is pulled. The diaphragm leak is when I pull the lever. Thanks
AdamR28
Ok, all the above points to that it just needs a good bleed and a new diaphragm. The squelching will be fluid that's come out from under the reservoir cap and therefore 'farting' air through part HBSP102: http://www.roteccycles.co.uk/ekmps/shops/rotec/images/hope-mono-mini-master-cylinder-lever-lid-diaphragm-%5B2%5D-2107-p.jpg- it doesn't do this when it's dry. If the reservoir cap bolts have been too tight in the past it can deformed the diaphragm, and will never seal properly again, which is the likely cause of your leak. jnthebiker
Ok, thanks. Would you be willing to point me to a link to the proper diaphragm?
AdamR28
NP. Sure, it's the 2006 model: http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/disc_brake_spares/hope_mini_lever_diaphragm/c110p10151.html
jnthebiker
Thanks! You might be getting an order in the next few days, not sure.
AdamR28
No worries. Given the cost of shipping, it's probably worth having a look around a bit more locally first - someone should have one

AdamR28
That you should replace the diaphragm evey time you bleed the brake? (Which is bollocks)
niconj
Wasn't talking about this but about the bleeding procedure. Replacing the diaphragm every time is indeed bollocks.
