kallio
Hey guys, I'm looking at some potential All Mountain bikes as I've got some money squirrelled away and want to ride another discipline other than only trials! What angles are desirable in All Mountain riding or Freeriding? I want to be able to play a bit on the bike, something that can descend, climb, but can also handle drops and jumps on occasion, and quite importantly be able to use basic trials manoeuvres when it comes to rock gardens or any other tricky terrain. How do these two Ellsworths look in terms of spec and value for money? They're both second hand sold through the Ellsworth UK distributor. http://www.freeborn.co.uk/ex-demo-ellsworth-momentum-2012 http://www.freeborn.co.uk/pre-owned-ellsworth-epiphany-sst2 Open to suggestions. Would be very grateful if anyone who knows their MTB stuff share some wisdom! Thanks! Edited October 19, 2014 by kallio

kallio
1000 to test the water, 2000 if I decide to really get into it and go all out on a custom. I heard the Giant Trance is good too?
Jake.
My Dad has an 2006 Giant Reign which he bought from the shop new. Can't find any pictures anywhere so grabbed this from Google, that one looks like a small though. I loved it from the first moment I had a go, really really enjoyable bike. He has a 29er alongside this so I always use it on rides. I've ridden it in the Alps and it took hits really well, and was more capable of DH than I expected. The other night I went on an XC ride with my Dad with a bunch of other enthusiasts at a place called friston forest, it's got lots of nice trails that start at the top of a 1 mile long hill. I was never the fastest on the climbs but I was in the first 3 or 4 out of 10 since most riders were on hardtails/full rigid combined with single speed (suits the area better), and if I were to buy a mountain bike of my own it would definitely be an AM no doubt at all, I'd love a hard-tail on the sidelines though. I was much more confident going back down through the single-tracks though and felt really comfortable jumping it too, it has a super short stem and very wide bars and a dropper saddle- so felt like swapping between a toughened XC bike and a light dh/jump bike at the press of a button haha. In terms of trialsy moves? I'm a bit confused with what you mean here. Rock gardens are all about just ploughing through them at speed and hoping you take the best line imo. I'm not the best/most keen MTBer and I'm utterly shit when it comes to suspension components and all that, but I'd advise against the bikes you shared, they look more like jump bikes/dh bikes than bikes you can take MTBing.
