Aldred_85
Morning all. Well its been 5 plus years since my zebdi was stolen. I took that as a sign that it was time to call it a day. While the kids have been taking up all my time, its now changed a bit. So.. I've bought myself a 2nd hand zoot frame, built it up, and just come back from my first proper ride. Apart from achin like hell, it was fun. Glad i convinced the Mrs to let me spend the dosh to "have an early mid life-crisis" I just have a couple of questions and observations. First and foremost; does anyone live around bexhill these days? It took me a while to find the balance point on the rear wheel, so im merrily manual-ing, but, getting to it is a real labour. Im currently running the 110 x 20 stem that came with the frame. I tried a 60 x 5... Yes, i know, big mistake.. Would we all agree that a 90 x 35 would be a logical step? I've never been a front wheel kinda guy, always happier hurtling along on the back. Or do just need to get used to modern geometry? Finally... My god, has anyone else ever gone backwards in engegement points? Its plain scary! I had the luxury of 72poe on my zebdi, now back on 16poe until finance allows. The deadtime between engagements seems huge! Does nothing for confidence! Thanks for hearing my ramblings.
Herbertlemon102
16 points if engagement sounds like it'll hinder everything that's just scary. I couldn't have any less than
Blake
Jake Deakin, Josh Burkett and Jack Harmer ain't far from you. Not sure what josh is doing with his time these days though Brighton has few people and I enjoy riding there ^^
Aldred_85
16 points if engagement sounds like it'll hinder everything that's just scary. I couldn't have any less than 70 I remember a time when anything more than 70 was only the reserve of those with Chriskings. 24 to 48 was considered normal. My xc bike has 36 poe, i thought that was good. Haha.

onzatpro09
My Hope hub has 80 EPs per wheel rotation, or 110 EPs per crank rotation.
Aldred_85
What seems to norm these days on 26/24? Freewheel or freehub? Especially from a cost point of view...
onzatpro09
I suppose freewheels are more common on trialsy setups, but a fair amount use freehubs, especially on streety builds. Personally, I wouldn't use anything other than a decent freehub
Ross McArthur
It depends where you want to run the freewheel. If you've got it attached to your cranks it's easy enough to get a proper sized cog on the rear wheel. If you run the FW on your hub, be it 16 tooth or worse 18 tooth, it'll be harder to find a set up for your cranks which gives you a decent ratio. If you can afford it, a free hub is your best bet. You can pick up a second hand hope trials hub for around £60 if you look hard enough. Having that would mean you can have a normal 22tooth front ring and rock guard or an 18tooth set up of that's what floats your boat. Having either of these with a suitably sized rear cog will give you a nice solid feeling drive train. Having a free hub will mean your chain is stationary when you're not pedalling. So for manuals etc, you won't have an excuse for your jeans being sucked into your chain!
Aldred_85
So are Hope the only recomended freehubs for trials these day? I take it halo/dmr 6 pawls are pretty rubbish? Does anyone have any experience going from 110x20 to 90x35 stem?
dezmtber
hope or king. i havent seen any other brands work well with trials
isitafox
Yeah a 90 will make a big difference on a zoot or even a 110x35 if you want to keep it trialsy. I'd stick to a hope and 22-15/16 depending on how heavy you like the gearing!
Blake
Hope warrant trials, doubt halo or dmr do

Jake.
Bexhill is far but has nice riding spots, I may pop by for a ride sometime soon. Josh doesn't ride much... Jack sticks to Brighton, I tend to also.
Aldred_85
Holy shit, blast from the past! Hi, yeah, been a very long time. Take your nowhere near hastings anymore. Still riding trials? Bexhill is far but has nice riding spots, I may pop by for a ride sometime soon. Josh doesn't ride much... Jack sticks to Brighton, I tend to also. I probably bit too amateur to warrant the journey yet.. Haha. But agreed bexhill has some nice places, especially since they redeveloped the seafront. Partly what spurred me on to start again. MadManMike
Hi, yeah, been a very long time. Take your nowhere near hastings anymore. Still riding trials? Yeah I moved away last year, down in Bristol now! I have a jump bike these days, though I generally just cruise the streets to maintain fitness rather than actually "riding". I get out around bexhill once or twice a week. Hopefully more so in the spring summer. Never really go further than bexhill though.
peter_t
Would you mind if i tag along sometime? I rode with a guy from Hailsham which was great but he hasn't got much time now with his new job
Skoze
I'm hoping to play bikes again soon, all depends on time and cash though! Might end up seeing you around these parts. 90x35 will be nice on that - I get the feel of the kind of riding you'll want to do and any longer wont do you any favours. Could even go down to 75mm or so, and stick some nice high risers on there too.

Lost all my confidence, skill, luck, etc. I'm hoping to play bikes again soon, all depends on time and cash though! So far so good, still a litte effort to get on back, but easier than before. Atleast I can still 'attempt' more traditional trials.
Scott Gibbs
I ran a Halo on my old Saracen and trust me for the love of God/Allah/Bhudda ect don't run one for trials!! Also there's the other option of running a pukka trials freewheel on the back in a screw on hub. Although keep an eye on the lockring. Aldred_85
I'm now running a budget Quanta hub, which was previously on an xc wheelset i built. I drilled the qr stubs out to use a solid m10 axle. 36 POE on alloy freehub. Umm.. Sketchy.
