fakebob80
Hi Guys My wife and my best mate reckon I'd best get on here to find out the best options for a trials bike for a man-mountain such as myself, to augment frequent trips to the gym (not just to drink coffee in their bar!) and get some weight off, build core strength and have some fun. Having been an avid cross country rider (is that swearing on this forum? I will have to check the rules!) and giving it up 10 years ago when I started university, I need to get back doing something to burn some flab. I was 6'8" and 12st back then and I'm now (still 6'8") 17st, after whomping on 7st in 5 months at uni and only managing to lose 2st since then! So, my question for you guys is: what bike/frame/setup would you recommend for a giant like me to start trials riding? My best mate is a mere waif of a chap and will ride anything, but he's not much good on advice! Thanks for your help Big FakeBob80

fakebob80
I'm inclined towards no seat.

dezmtber
Jeff lenosky rides a regular jump bike modifyed for trials. Hes not as heavy as you but he is defintly as tall i think. Maybe worth a google search to see what setups he has used.

fakebob80
I agree on the van! I found this setup info on Sicklines http://www.sicklines.com/2007/03/08/what-the-pros-ride-jeff-lenoskys-giant-stp/ It's basically a Giant STP as far as I can make out, with a few mods. I have seen a STP frame on eBay, plenty there! And I'm not averse to building a setup, as I've had to do since I was in school, I'm thinking a build is not a bad way to go. Any tips on building this or similar? (I'm limited as to posting until I get 3 more approved posts today) Thanks guys! Big FakeBob80
crilin202
I have a giant stp frame with headset, bb, cranks and tensioner dirt cheap mate. Get in touch if you're interested
Mark W
That STP won't really be that good for riding trials on. If you're after more of a "Do everything" kind of bike then it might be a reasonable shout, but the geometry of the frame doesn't really lend itself to trials riding that well. If you're tempted by a more conventional looking bike to ride trials on, an Inspired Hex might not be a bad shout. There seem to be quite a few lurking in the For Sale section for very little money most of the time. Size and weight don't necessarily have to be an issue in terms of your bike and/or setup - I can think of 2 members on here who were both over 20st and over 6ft tall who rode pretty lightweight builds (and rode them well too!) with no problems at all. I know riders who are a lot lighter than that who break parts much faster because of their riding style. Do you have any particular budget in mind at all? That's often a key factor as it'll dictate whether you buy new, go second hand and so on.
*gentlydoesit
Old boy chez is a big dude as I recall from a previous thread. might be worth giving him a shout, see how he rolls (no pun )
dngr2self
My mate used to be about 17 18 stone and rode a Because Simple(plus a couple of others) with no problems, he still rides it actually but he's lost weight now. Hes nowhere near as tall though but that can be made up for with the bike set up. It will feel cramped at first though but you'll get used to it. fakebob80
Thanks guys! I'm working out a budget in the next few weeks, depending on if a contract comes in or not! I'm buying for my wife too, so I might need some pointers, although she has her heart set on an Onza Zoot.
