PatJsy
Not sure if this has been discussed on here before but a friend of mine is after a bike which he describes as something for cruising that he can still do a few "things" on. Having failed to convince him it's either one or the other (he rides BMX so in my head it makes sense for him to have a 2nd bike just for commuting) he's considering a 26" Inspired and sticking gears on it... My initial thoughts were that it's a ridiculous idea, with a 22t on the front even a 12t cog on the back would still be pretty useless for riding around and any higher gears would just be unnecessary. But saying that, I've got no real experience so I thought I'd try and get some advice here. Has anyone done something like this?
isitafox
That's how we used to roll in the old days and had no problems!
PatJsy
That's how we used to roll in the old days and had no problems! Funny enough he used to ride trials a good few years ago! Geared trials bikes were before my time I'm afraid What's the set up like then?
manuel
Everyone used to run 22 and a road cassette. I miss the ability to go mega fast at stuff, but I don't miss bashing off the hanger... Bottom cog is good enough to get up some decent speed in a sprint.
PatJsy
That's fair enough, I still struggle to imagine how a bike like that would be comfortable for commuting though - seems like you'd top it out way too easy!
Jake.
Slow town commuting more like?
dezmtber
He could run a 26t cog up front with a mountain bike cassette 11-34 that wouldn't be all that bad
isitafox
I used to ride 3.5 miles everyday with mine no problem
dezmtber
I have two bikes to ride and now and again I ride my 2 mile commute on the trial bike no problem, even when that used to be on a mod.
Ross McArthur
He could run a 26t cog up front with a mountain bike cassette 11-34 that wouldn't be all that bad Why a cassette with that range?
Jake.
26-34 what the f**k. Do you really think he's gonna be climbing alp d'huez?
JDâ„¢
What you really want is an old 6-speed cassette, like we all used to run in comps because them were the rules.
Ross McArthur
With one steel and five carbon cogs, if you were super posh.
Jake.
Have mods ever had gears? Guessing no but still curious.
JDâ„¢
Nah, the rules were singlespeed for Mods and 6 working gears for Stock (although I'm sure they were often referred to as MTBs, because that's what they were really). I was never posh enough for carbon cogs, Ross!
J.KYDD
Have mods ever had gears? Guessing no but still curious. As JD said. That's where the terms 'Mod' and 'Stock' come from. 26" bikes had to have 6 working gears and in the early days were essentially just 'stock' MTB's Mod stands for modified - as they were the first bikes designed purely for trials, modified for the sport
Jake.
Thought as such, cheers
dezmtber
26-34 what the f**k. Do you really think he's gonna be climbing alp d'huez? use a 32 with bash and the 11-34 then.
Ross McArthur
Even still! A 34? f**k having a huge wide range on the back just for going down the shops. It looks shit on a trials bike and just isn’t necessary. Edited June 13, 2014 by Ross McArthur
dezmtber
if he runs a road cassette then a road mech will come with that, a noisy road mech that clangs on the chainstay. with a mtb cassette he can run a shimano shadow or sram mech which will work much much better for trials n shopping runs he could still use a 9spd 11-32 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-x7-9-speed-rear-mech/rp-prod41155 this sram x7 i would say worth a shot Edited June 13, 2014 by dezmtber
manuel
Classic move is to take out the spring on the mech and lock it in place. No clanging...
Ross McArthur
Or a little section of old worn grip cut off and zip tied to the frame or mech.
Scott Gibbs
Ah this topic is bringing back memories!! I'd say 22 or 24 with a roadie cassette and road mech with the afore mentioned modification perfect set up.
trialsalot
12-21 and a 22t ring with a sram road mech. The spring tension on sram short cage stuff is crazy good!
Ross McArthur
I guess with the creation of the new Fourplay, "gears on an Inspired" will soon be a thing of the past!
