The crash thread

Dead sailored the jump box at epic skatepark ( now creation?) in brum, landed in a tangle with the bike. Right leg wouldn't work when I tried to kick it away so used my left, cue a sudden sucking/pulling feeling from the top of my right thigh and a string of flesh hanging from the right hand grip.

The bars had hit me in the groin, just on the crease between thigh and pelvis, shattered the plastic bar plug on impact and apple cored a 22mm hole out of my groin. The grip was rolled back 3" giving an indication of the depth, I still have the grips on my bmx and the right one is now split where it was pushed in.

I lost about 3 pints of blood before the paramedics got there but fortunately managed to stop most of the bleeding. At A&E it took 5 stitches to close the cored out hole and another 4 to seal the wound. Whilst stitching it up they could see the femoral artery in the bottom of the hole :(

Overnight stay in hospital, a week of antibiotics and codeine and I could just about walk again, luckily I had only punched a hole through the curtain of muscle between two of the tendons. I suffered from minor nerve damage which manifested in the feeling of my inside thigh being sandpapered for 18+ months.

This is the reason I tell anyone without bar plugs to stop being a penis and get some fitted!

My brother did a similar thing, but at Newport skatepark. Wallride over the jumpbox, got sketchy and fell off on the way back in. Landed on the end of his bars, and managed to rupture his femoral artery. The only reason he didn't die was that his bar-end stopped the skin from breaking so he didn't just bleed out in the skatepark. 11 hours of surgery (he was in theatre for 6 hours, then when he came out they realised there was no pulse in his lower leg/foot so he had to go in again for another 5 hours) and something like 10 pints of blood later they managed to get it sealed up again by creating a new pathway for the blood that should have been going through that artery. He's got a scar running from near his groin down to just past his calf. Initially the guy at Newport wouldn't even call him an ambulance because "it didn't look too bad".

Holy shit, so he ruptured the artery without breaking skin, just subdermal bleeding?

I was lucky, if it had gone in another mm or two I would have bled out with no hope of stopping it, the wound was too high to apply a tourniquet; like the guy in blackhawk down. As it was I spent about 90 minutes getting checked and stitched and then to the ward with no major issues.

That femoral artery Injury sounds pretty terrible, even worse when you can't see it and no one grasps the gravity of the situation! Most of my injuries are from trials, but the worst seem to be on dirt jump or road ones. Trials for me is just cuts to the legs and arms, plus the many many bruises.
