isitafox
Right lads after some input regarding parking fines. A few weeks ago my wife got a parking fine through in the post from a private company (Excel Parking) for £60 or an early settlement of £36 due to her sister buying a ticket but getting the car reg mixed up, she put UYZ in the machine instead of UZY. I disputed the ticket stating it was a simple mistake and they replied stating that they could see the mistake so as a good will gesture they would lower the fine to £10. I told my wife that was bollocks and not to pay it and now we've had a letter through asking for £100. I'm pretty sure I'm in the right and we have no legal obligation to pay the fine at all, we still have the ticket she bought at the time as well. Suggestions? dann2707
Post a pic of the ticket mate. If it's not endorsed by the Council or Police you don't have to pay anything. Something to do with the wording of it too which means you don't have to pay it but you'll have to google it.
*gentlydoesit
Happened to me in a aldi car park a few months back, ignored itand havnt heard since. There are some laws governing this now, (or a governing body) can't remember the details now but in some cases it is enforceable. Not yours though . Don't do any more comunicating! monkeyseemonkeydo
be careful ignoring it though- Have you seen any of the 'Parking mad' TV stuff where people are stopped via ANPR and asked to pay like £600 charges or have their car removed from them? Not sure if those are only for council enforced tickets or whatever but you don't want to be on the end of that bill with no options. Did you continue communication after the £10 offer or just ignore it?
isitafox
Just ignored it, hell of a goodwill gesture just charging us a tenner for a simple mistake.
AndrewEH1
Might be worth posting on forums.pepipoo.com for confirmation they can be ignored. Edited May 27, 2014 by AndrewEH1
Mikee
If it's a private company then it's an invoice of what they feel they should charge you, not a fine. For you to be legally required to pay, they must first take you to court for a contract dispute. Since your wife paid to park and didn't over stay... just a simple mistake, I say don't pay. Tony Harrison
Don't pay it. They lowered it to £10 because they know they don't have a leg to stand on. Fining you guys for a simple mistake is simply bloody minded, and it's where the UK goes to sh't on a regular basis. Out of sheer stubborn determination not to give into that bs, I wouldn't pay, but regardless there's pretty much f-all they can do if they're private. If they persist, write to your local paper, MP etc, cause a stink.
isitafox
Cheers guys, I as gonna ignore and now you've backed up my decision!
JQ1989
Robbing bastards, I had one for stopping to check my phone in a lay-by near Luton airport, I was there for one minute. I think that was Excel too. After doing a bit of research I discovered that (as mentioned above) you only have to pay a parking fine if it's from the council or police and private companies like this have no legal right to fine you. Guess it works for 90% of the public who shit themselves and pay up. They should all be shot IMHO. (the parking companies that is, not the public!) trialsbikingnunn
my brother had a similar problem when he stayed over at his then girlfriend's house. Parked in the same place as he had done many times and then the next day he had a parking fine but it said his car had only be observed for 2 minutes before it had been given a ticket. It was from a private company but we called them and they did work for the council so he had to pay but he disputed it and ended up getting out of it. I'd say check to make sure they aren't employed by the council otherwise ignoring it could bite you in the arse
isitafox
Nah it's definitely not council related as it's a car park at a small shopping complex, Next, H+M, Argos, Boots, Frankie and Bennys, Toys r us, etc.....
anzo
Call your local citizens advice. They will offer best guidance and in most cases take the problem off your hands for you.

There are two places to appeal to but it seems easier to let them take you to court, which almost never happens.
