Repalce star nut

I was wondering if anyone could give be a bit of advise/pointers. I need to somehow replace my star nut in my Neon forks. I've had two "small" star nuts pull up the steerer. It doesn't matter how far down they go,or how straight they are they only last around 4 weeks and destroy them selves. ( with correct tool too)

I'm wanting to machine up a plug type insert with a thread down the middle to do away with the starnut. Interference fit if possible or tight enough so it wont spin. Or should I use epoxy to stick it in?

Just wont advice before I go mental on a lathe.

Sort of thing I want to make

If you destroy every star nuts you try to put in 1 month, then you're doing something wrong (incorrect size, bad installation, overclamping the bolt).

Keep in mind the star nut should be "hard" to put in the steerer, but not too hard. Not too loose too.
And you must tighten the headset bolt just enough in order to remove any play, you don't need to tighten it more.

I always had issues with starnuts on my bmx, I'm with mathew on finding somthing stronger.

Bond it via heating the steerer a fair bit and cooling the plug loads.

I thought this, it will work if done carfully and the insert is the bang on size. Edited by *gentlydoesit

I've used araldite/generic epoxy resin to hold them in before. Other alternatives would just be to make a headlock-style system?

Something else to check is that your stem's clamping properly too, by the way. Clean the steerer tube/steerer clamp area, grease up the bolts, etc. Once you've set the headset preload with your top cap it shouldn't really have to do much else but just chill out up top.

Thanks for the input fellas. but as the steerer is not too short by 20mm. I'll get getting a new pair Monday. With a "normal" stem should be back running for next end!!

as for what people said. headlock would work as the one I had (didnt really want to buy new) the threaded bit was too big for the forks and stuck out 50mm!

Hope Hed doctor - too big. I would have loved one, but with having a thick steerer tube wouldn't work.
