Joe O'Connor
Hey folk, So this is something I had never really thought about in the past but I am beginning to think it might be limiting my improvements. Whats the norm in terms of gearing for trials? I'm just doing the usual sorta noob stuff, bouncing around on rocks and at parks trying to improve my skills and get higher, so pretty much street riding. Had a count of the teeth today and I am running 15 on the back and 18 on the front. I've always felt like its too lower geared? Would I be correct? And what would be a fab set up for me be? craigjames
For 26" that's pretty much your standard gearing with 175mm cranks. Mod 18:12 with 165-170mm cranks, although I personally just run the 175mm cranks i had on my stock. What bike do you have?
Joe O'Connor
True true. I have a Adamant A1 with all GU parts on it. Is it an alright idea to go 18:12 on a 26"?
bing
No mate, you'll find it too hard to get power in, unless you have legs like Chris hoy. Try 18-14, but that's the lowest I'd go. Think Damon used to run 18-

insomnia
FIrst thing i thought about reading "Needs more power" was "SQUATS"
HippY
just a quick question from the same topic I have a 24 bike, its street trial I run on 160 cranks, 18-13 gear ratio, and it seems really high for me What should I do? Get 14 on the back, or just practice and work out till I can handle 18-13?

But you have a street bike so harder gearing is more common, get used to the 18:13 x
Thee Damon Watson
the 'standard' gear is 18-15 with 175 cranks! i prefer to run 18-14 with 170's, wheel rotates more, all depends on your power though, as you have to overcome the initial inertia
bing
True. Have you riden with 18-14? Would you recommend it? Yes I've tried it, but it was far too hard to get any power in. 18-15 is normal, 18-16 is if you want it to be lighter still
craigjames
Unless you're Damon with thighs of steel 18:15 is more than enough. Do you need more power? Or just practice more and perfect your technique.
