HippY
Hello guys, I just have a quick question It seems that my forks tube is a little bit wider at the bottom,as when I tried to drop the bottom headset cup, it got stuck 1 cm from the very bottom, so did my spacer. I greased the cup, and now, with every bunny hop, I need to tighten the bolt, so it will be stiff and not moving. Questions of the day: Is it normal? What should I do, get a hammered get a hammer just hammer the bottom cup down nicely until it wont move?
Blake
What do you mean bottom cup? Do you mean the crown race?
HippY
Headset has 4 parts 2 are integrated in the frame and.2 are just metal parts covering te headset. I am talking about these covers and on the bottom It might called that:/

harmertrials
Yeah that'll be your crown race. Essentially the very bottom part of the headset correct? You need to make sure this in sitting tight against the bottom of the steerer tube before inserting the forks into the frame.
HippY
http://www.velosolo.co.uk/mongo.html There is a full blue headset.in the middle, i have mongo as well On that picture there is a silver part on the right i have that part stuck I dont have the silver part on the left
harmertrials
The part on the right needs to sit at the bottom of the steerer tube, and the opposite way round to how it's pictured there.
HippY
That is on the bottom And i am missing the small silver stuff on the left thaylt is essential?
harmertrials
Yeah that is essential, sorry I forgot to add. Without it the headset will not clamp tight as that piece is what seals the top bearing.
Blake
That silver bit keeps on the left keeps it all central in relation to the steerer tube. The bit that you have stuck needs to be "gently persuaded" down to the bottom, it can be done but overtightening the bolt however it's not good for the bolt, or the threads on the starnut. Hammer/screwdriver can work but can slightly damage the race, a larger tube that sits over it is ideal but it can be hard just to have those things lying around

I might be able to make the compression ring from a headset.spacer btw Edit: After looking at the headset spares on tarty a little modification I have both the cups, with the bearing inside them These cups has covers(wedges?) i have both of them I am missing the crown race, a ring that has a whole in it so you can compress it The bottom wedge/ cover stucks on the steerer tube and i dont have a crown race What to do? HippY
I will take pictures as soon as i get home The problem is that i try to explain something that i do not understand myself as well and i get confused :/
ogre
well make it easier for everyone, get a picture, label every part with a number and an arrow on paint, and go from there. or go on this; to start addressing things, your crown race wants to be hammered all the way down to the bottom of your forks, find a tube with a greater diameter than your steerer, i used to use a car-jack stand and hammer my forks into the crown race. you could always get a bikeshop to do it if your unsure. HippY
Yes, it is the crown race that cannot fall down! I do that then! Although i might not have the compression ring, i will check it Is that necessary?
harmertrials
Every part is necessary
williams
Just buy a new one from tarty, they cost like a tenner!
HippY
just checked: I have every part, bearings, cups, crowns, compression ring and crown race as well Now I need to hammer the crown race to the bottom of the steerer tube. How should I do it if I dont have any larger tubes? If I would use a spanner, that is larger than the steerer and sits on the crown race, and just hammer would it be good? The crown went down as low as this, now it needs a proper hammering Edited April 23, 2014 by UKHippY
dezmtber
Chop the fitting end off an bmx stunt peg a basic steel one the remaining part can be used as a headset crown setter. if the crown still is way too tight, cut a slot into the crown race with a hacksaw so it expands over the fork. basicly convert your unslotted crown race into a slotted one much like hope use.
