Lord Banks
Sorry, I know that this would have been asked a million times before, this being a trials forum and all. I have done a search, but as this is a trials forum, the amount of hits that come up for 'brake' are overwhelming. but..... I need some help buying a Rim brake for the rear of my Onza Bird 2011. It only has V brake mounts so I'd need an adapter from what I understand. There’s nothing wrong with my current setup, the problem is me, I have a 'Tennis Elbow', basically meaning I have little grip strength in my right hand, so I'm thinking a Hydro might help. Also, pads?!? Whats the crack there? I'm running Onza clear trials pads on a light grind with some monty brake spray which are spot on, but again, moving over to a hydro, i'll need some help there too. bing
You need an Evo 2 mounting kit and boosters, I have one you can have for a tenner posted. It's brand new, I'll put all the bolts and little bits in with it
*gentlydoesit
V's set propperly can be as good as a maggie bud. My experience of hydos is that the lever effort is slightly more than a cable, but the brake force is slightly more than a v. Have you experimented with differnt levers, cables, pads ect ? A link to the type of adapter you'll need http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/rim_brake_spares/because_4bolt_to_vee_adaptors/c5p12306.html Tnn or coust seem to be the pads of choice
bing
Pad wise, tnn adm/lgm, cousts, trialtechs or heatsink yellows. Get a grind on as well, makes them work so much better Edited April 3, 2014 by bing

isitafox
I'd stick with the V and just get a decent cable and some new pads, running a maggie isn't necessarily going to make it easier to hold your brake lever.
Lord Banks
My Vs are setup brilliantly (if I do say so myself!). I'm just finding my hand aching a bit when I'm using the rear brake for any length of time. My mountain bike has hydro disks on it and I need little effort to get full lock, so I was thinking the same for my trials bike. Although I'd never really thought about trying to improve my Vs as such, I thought I had them at optimum performance (for what they are), but maybe I’ll experiment with a different lever/cable and some 'proper' pads.... I must admit, fitting a hydro does fill me with dread, I see a lot of topics on here about different setups or problems people are having, I know my way around a V brake. isitafox
Maguras on a V mount on a mod especially is far from an ideal setup. Get a linear slic cable on there to start and some new pads and go from there!
Lord Banks
Yeah, think I might try that actually (cheaper anyway). Never really gave any thought to the actual cable, just having a read on that Sheldon Browns website about them, never really thought they were that important. isitafox
Will make a lot of difference! I suffer really bad cramps in my forearms from prolonged riding so I know where you're coming from, when I do a comp towards the end of the day I struggle to even pull my levers let alone hold them on! ogre
your grip strength will improve as you ride more too. look at other levers; the avid SD7 levers offer adjustment that changes the pull ratio; setting it 'low' makes the lever feel quite slack and spongy but you can pull hard on it quite comfortably you need to play with one to get it aha
Lord Banks
Unfortunately, my grip strength will most probably deteriorate, I have ‘tennis elbow', which basically means the tendons from my elbow down to my hand/fingers are gooshed. I’m starting Physio soon though, have to have injections straight into my elbow :'( Although those levers look sound, think I’ll get one ordered.
