craigjames
Yeah I kinda know about the disclaimers but I haven't had to tighten any stem more than 4Nm in my life especially when using carbon paste. I'm not worried about stripping the bolts but rather braking my bars. I wonder if it's a problem of the bars being very shiny (I mean the finish of the bars, don't know the English word for it). With "grit" you mean sandpaper? What number would you recommend? 400? 800? Also, I was thinking of mounting TryAll Carbon bars but am afraid that these wouldn't stand the clamping mechanism of the brother stem. I've got the brother stem and some TryAll carbon bars and have no problems running the two together, had them like that for 7 months or so. The clamps moving does sound odd, the clamps i have fit fairly snugly on the stem, not enough to make them rock with a handlebar in place and tightened up. Personally I don't use a torque wrench, no stress marks are showing on the stem or clamps so happy days.

Well, the clamp movement is like when the bolts aren't tightened and you can move the bar up and down. They should pull together enough to not move anymore when tightened but they do and it's annoying! When I tighten the bolts there is almost no gap on the front where the bolts are. FamilyBiker
sometimes its just a bad pairing of tolerances, say like your bars are a little too small and the clamp a little too big at the same time. we are talking about 0.08mm or something,if both have such a big difference its the worst case if you insist in using the same stem i´d be trying a set of bars which are known for being a tight fit. sorry to give you that info without remembering bars that are,but i am sure here are plenty of people knowing something
craigjames
Mine are tightened to the point where you can only just see light through the "gap". But everything is solid and without a hint of movement...

Both with the same result. Böse Zungen würden behaupten, dass mir hier wissentlich fehlerhafte Ware verkauft wurde.
trials hoe
Tried swapping the clamps to the other way round? (left one onto the right side of the stem and vice versa) sometimes stupid stuff like that works, worth a bash if you haven't had a go. I don't think that this would change anything as the radius stays the same and both clamps move equally.

niconj
Haben Sie in den Laden Sie sie gekauft haben zu sprechen? Lol. Doesn't make any sense. I bought it off this forum and am not sure what to think of it obviously. I don't think that such a defect gets by unnoticed.

I wished I had bough it from a shop but unfortunately I saw 40L as a good bargain....
niconj
Well, I got a very good offer from a polish trials SHOP for a Born CNC stem and have mounted it already. The four bolt clamping is so much better in my eyes and the stem looks awesome. Kinda like Thomson stems which are my favorites*. The finish of the Born stem is different to the Brother stem. It's not as smooth and even though it's anodized, I couldn't hear any clicking noise from it, probably due to the different surface. *I wished Thomson made 150x30° stems. I'd pay a lot of money for one of these. Edited April 3, 2014 by niconj
isitafox
I must admit the way that Brother stem clamped the bars looked awful!

isitafox
For a £75 stem it's shite
niconj
For a £75 stem it's shite I know and even with higher torque (and greased bolts) I could make the bar move when sidehopping (not that I know any technique). I guess I should post videos calling them "pure strength".
