marshole82
Hi all, I've just bought a single speed conversion kit and a half-link YBN chain for my bike build, but looking at the width of the chain i'm not sure it'll work with the sprockets on the rear or on my standard MTB chainset. Can anyone advise on what i can do or whether it will work or not? Or what the problems might be if i were to run it? Here's a link to my build thread and the last post by me on page 4 shows the new bits.... http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/topic/186134-my-quite-unattractive-build/page-4 cheers for your help Oli
Blake
Single speed chains are a lot wider than geared ones, so I doubt it will work i'm afraid.
marshole82
buggar. so what are my options? cheapest being get a 9 speed chain. but other options? are there screw on rear hubs and sprockets for these wider chains? and also a ffw and any screw-on crank? Blake
What hub you got? Standard sprockets like you have and a KMC z610 is all you ever need
Ross McArthur
Go for a KMC 610. Most people use them. Chuck the half link in the bin. Or alternatively, leave it at a skate park for a BMX'r to find.

marshole82
i have a BMX friend who will have it so no drama. i will have a standard sprocket/chainring width, hoping 22/16. so this kmc 610 - will it work ok if i decide to go ffw as well? marshole82
in fact, i'm a little bit sceptical of running a full link chain on the bike. i have vertical drop outs so there's no adjustment for slack. i dont really want to have to fork out £30 on a mech hanger and a tensioner, i'm supposed to be on a budget so i dont build an expensive bike and not use it lol
bing
Kmc610 and a spoke tensioner. Done
marshole82
Kmc610 and a spoke tensioner. Done but then i need to shell out more cash on a mech hanger and tensioner. can i use the kmc and shorten it? admittedly it might nt be 100% tight, but maybe i sneak in a single halk link? the £2.50 for a half link sounds good compared to the £30 on hanger and tensioner. i might add, that although this is a bodge of sorts, it will only be until i decide if i like trials or not. if i get more serious then i will upgrade the frame to horizontal drop outs, upgrade the drivetrain and return to a full link chain - just looking for something cheap and safe for beginners stuff like hops and (very) small wall climbs etc
bing
Spoke tensioners are used from an old spoke, wrapped around the axle end
onzatpro09
Spoke tensioners are used from an old spoke, wrapped around the axle end Could you please elaborate or post pics I keep hearing about these "spoke tensioners" but I am clueless as to how they work
niconj
Why not just use the KMC 610 with a single half link. Works, especially being "only" a MTB.

niconj
I'm using this combination on my trials bike and haven't found any downside to it. people. say that half links are sh*** but it's better than a half link chain. On a MTB, it's not a problem at all. Have ridden half links forever there and never broke any, even reusing them a couple of times.
