Job situation help please

So Trials Forum, feel free to give me some advice on this predicament. I am currently working a temp job, one that started as six weeks but got extended by three months. The contract will end at the end of July. The job is the same place my Dad works and takes us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there each way so my working day feels like 7am to 7pm. The work itself is boring pretty much all the time without exception, and the whole working here thing does depress me a lot. I dread going back there and hate getting up in the morning knowing what’s going to happen for the rest of the day. However, it means I do have a job and the pay is pretty good. A uni graduate would probably be happy with the pay.

Yesterday I got offered another three months extension so my question is whether or not I should go for it or not. I’ve been looking around more locally for something and nothing seems to be immediately going that I could go for and I think to get another job I’d have to put in the effort. I’m totally up for this but I don’t really have the time to go around enquiring when I’m currently working, and I can’t really do any interviews at the moment.

Basically should I play it safe for another three months or say no thanks and try my luck elsewhere? What’d you guys think?

Is there any reason you can't accept the extension and keep looking for jobs in the meantime? If one comes along and you get it then hand your notice in and leave. Only thing that makes tricky would be if you had to go off for interviews etc I suppose, but you must have some form of leave entitlement.

Have a chat with your current employer if you get on with them relatively well and let them know exactly where you stand; they may well be more understanding than you expect :)

How long do you have to decide?

Tomorrow morning...

Probably makes the most sense but I'm scared that if I accept it I'll just stick with it because it pays well (for what it is). The people here have all been here a while and I don't want to end up getting stuck here. Little drastic but the impulse is to decline as a definitive way of not coming back. I don't have much to say to my boss; my problems are tedium, the commute, wanting to work near people younger than 32 and those are all things that can't be changed effectivly.

I meant more about chatting to him about wanting to look around for other jobs - you might find he appreciates the situation and is happy for you to sign up for 3 months but knowing you're looking around, giving you a 2 week notice if you find something. Any idea how much notice you have to give if you want to leave?

Take the extension and keep looking for another job. I know its a cliche but its much easier to find work when you are already employed. Most employers allow for time off for interviews and stuff like that but just make sure that you keep looking for something else and dont just sit around waiting for something to fall in your lap

Are there no options to move sideways into a more fulfilling role in the company and potentially more permanent? If you explain your situation to the boss he may be able to help you out, especially if he's happy with what you're doing and wants you to continue. If there's no other options there for you I'd still say you'd be silly to leave without already having something lined up (in this climate anyway). If you accept the extension you could always get an awesome job next week and just work out a months notice or whatever surely?

I'd feel kind of bad about saying that though. My boss has been really good with letting my work around physio appointments and that stuff so I don't want to sound like I'm saying I'm just going to take their offer til I get a better one. Just looked in my contract and for temps it's one weeks notice, so that's not as bad as I thought.

I'd thought about an opening there but it was way too similar to what I'm doing now, and really I want to work somewhere closer that I could get to fairly easily by myself.

Defiantly won't wait for my lap to get occupied. I just needed some reassurance due to my hatred for the job. The people and place are good it's just a lot of the time I'm waiting to be given work so I feel like every hour there's wasted. Guess I can't complain too much having a job though.

Thanks guy :)
