FamilyBiker
i think i never gave so much likes in a row as in this thread lol fun fact: here in germany you can buy the energy drink "ständer", which means hard-on in the alternative, but in the original meaning something like rack or stand. bikeperson45
How many 5 years old do you know who know what the "alternative" meaning of pussy? That's the whole crux of it - young children aren't going to know what that means, and even if older kids do they're not going to be offended by it, are they? But five year olds are learning to read, they go in a shop and see a drink they pick up the word and start using it non feline related contexts. Obviously it's not genuinely offensive but I still think it's a bit much. They've used a naughty word so people talk about it and at the same time kids walking around in stores start learning some slang genital terms without understanding them. If a white guy ignorant to history started using the n word you don't say 'he doesn't know what it means, let him keep saying that to people', you say 'you don't realize it but you shouldn't say that'. Couple of things there - who's letting their 5 year old drink energy drink? And why in the f**k would they make it such a sexual reference to ask for one?! Ever heard a toddler ask for a "sweet coke"? On that note, should "coke" be banned as a drink due to its affiliation with the drug, Incase kids get the wrong idea and it corrupts them? ...Or does "coke" not have a double meaning to a kid in the same way "pussy" doesn't...? They don't have to drink it, they just have to see the word that's branded in shops. And yea I joking when I put 'sweet' in there, but those five year olds still have pussy on their mind. And pussy's not actually linked to have been made with vaginas, so kind of a difference.
Mark W
But five year olds are learning to read, they go in a shop and see a drink they pick up the word and start using it non feline related contexts. If they don't know there's another meaning for it though, they're not going to just fabricate it? The Pussy I saw in a shop was next to some Purdeys - they're not going to suddenly start dropping Purdeys into a conversation with some kind of fictional secondary meaning? I don't know a hell of a lot about world history, but I'm pretty sure there was never a female slavery trade where the word "Pussy" was used in a derogatory way to describe women, so I don't really think that the historical baggage of "The N-Word" is really equivalent to the word Pussy, and consequently I don't really get how you can try and compare the effect of saying them like that? That combined with the way that there's no real connection to a can saying "Pussy" on it to genitalia unless it's explained to a child (who, as I said, I don't think would suddenly start saying it) doesn't make it seem like a huge deal. Bearing in mind it's been around for 6 years now, have you noticed loads of kids out there using the word "Pussy" all the time? I haven't, my Mum's a primary school teacher and doesn't have an epidemic of kids using the word "Pussy" (she teaches year 5 kids and they definitely don't operate with that kind of mindset), it doesn't seem to be a topic of conversation for anyone out there... EDIT: My main beef with Pussy is just that it's a shit name. Apart from the alternative meaning being discussed at punishing length here, there's the other way people use the term pussy too (e.g. if you don't do something it's known as "Pussying out"), so why would you want to align your drink with that name? Presumably this is why in 2011 Pussy sold around 2.4million cans, whereas Red Bull sold 4.6billion.
Blake
Why is there a 4 page thread about a low quality energy drink? You lose the argument with an idiot the moment you engage.

N word's on a different league on the offense scale, guess I'm just trying to say about how kids could pick up the word and not understand the significance the word has when it's actually used. It's just not something the should be encouraged with general products like energy drinks. Seems to me that women find the word pussy and c*unt worse than words like f*ck, and if the drink was called 'f*ck' would it have been allowed to be sold as openly? Genuine question there. Generally though I do notice kids using worse language and I don't like that. I only really encountered swear words when I started secondary school which was because of the mix of older students. In primary school none of my friends swore. These days though (I help out with Scouts a lil) I've heard 9 year olds calling each other pussies and bitches and whatever and it's always weird hearing young people swear like that, but that's obviously going to be due to more than an energy drink I'll admit. And the thing I think is sad is I'd bet the majority of the 2.4 million people who bought it are teenagers who buy it once just so they can go back to their friend's saying 'hey guys, I just got some pussy' and trying not to grin. And yea, bad name generally
MadManMike
You're special. How can you even ask that question? "F*ck" is a swear word, through and through. "F*ck" is not another word for a cat. They are entirely different words.
bikeperson45
As much as you can say it's another word for cat, we know it's a marketing gimmick to get a reaction and not a drink for the tired cat appreciating demographic.
MadManMike
Yes, but my point is that f*ck is just an offensive word. Pussy has multiple meanings and is not offensive, unless used in an offensive way. (And no, putting it on a can of drink is not an offensive way)

(And no, putting it on a can of drink is not an offensive way) I never said it was offensive, all I've been saying is that it's a pathetic marketing thing playing with a word with multiple meanings, intentionally chosen because one of two of those meanings can be considered offensive. Oh god this thread makes my brain hurt. I give up, bikeperson and f**kmegently you are both f**king retarded. And for those reasons, I'm out. I find that offensive, but if we're at the petty personal insult stage then I hope the fleas of a thousand camels nest in your hair. And if you actually showed me anything that I've said that is 'f*cking retarded' and not just something you simply disagree with I'll accept your poorly worded criticism. That was my point before though - are kids going to start using the word 'Bovril' because they've seen it on some packaging? Are they suddenly going to start using the word 'Pantene' because they've seen it on a billboard? When there's an entire internet full of offensive content, I doubt that packaging for a product is going to make much of a difference. It's just not the way people are going to pick up on stuff because there's no reason they would do. Your "genuine question" is matched by an "obvious answer". bikeperson45
Retarded. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/f**king_Hell A beer called 'f**king Hell' that's sold in Europe, Asia and Australia. None of those names have multiple meanings relating to genitals though, so there's going to be more of an attraction to Pussy. And when their slogan's 'The drink is pure, your mind isn't' their intention is obvious and it's the intention that I think makes it bad. And whatever spin you put on it I disagree with using potentially offensive slang words for marketing in places where kids are going to see them. I think it's time to accept that your point was retarded. MadManMike
After 5 pages of replies, I'm still of the opinion: "Who gives half a shit?" I mean clearly two people do, at least, but I'd imagine most people have more important things to worry about than the name of a brand. bikeperson45
The worst thing is I only replied at first for the sake of making the argument a little more two sided, and to criticize tiling. In reality, I'd walk past it with a slight look of cynicism yet when I put my view into writing I'm retarded. It's safe to assume having seen the drink on a shelf it's never ruined my day and it's never concerned me enough to formally complain about it. And the whole 'thought you'd have more important things to worry about' is a bad point. I do, and presumably you have more important things than replying to someone with a differing view but still we're both here.

Europe has different laws on the naming of products though - you wouldn't be legally allowed to register that business in the UK. Again, what I was saying about the product in a shop is that there is no duality of meaning for the name if you're unaware that there's another name for it. Some kid in a shop isn't going to know that there's another meaning for the name 'Pussy', and consequently there's nothing for them to pick up. That's why I mentioned other products - if you don't know that a word has another meaning (which young children won't), there's no reason to suddenly assume it would or to start using it in conversation with someone. FamilyBiker
hmm,my son is 8 years old and can even read for 2 1/2 years now,how coudl he´ve been getting the word "ständer" on an energy can that is at his face height in our rewe store, with 5 years or under? by now he didnt notice it,despite him going to the store several times,to that shelve, with me buying the rockstar drinks standing right next to that, some billy boy cans and a drink called sexergy.and that "ständer" can has a dildo logo on it. i think ethically its something to think about, but in real life you just have a certain amount of control of who your kids are and how they have to be educated by you to grow up to an age where it doesnt matter at all,at the end they became people that hopefully are educated to be protected against shit, thats our job as parents just my 2 cents,or pence,or soles Edited December 21, 2013 by FamilyBiker
